South bowlers advance to state The South Medford High boys bowling team captured second place Sunday in the 31-team District 5 tournament at Lava Lanes and advanced to the state tournament for the first time ever. For the second straight year on the girls side, the Ashland High girls took home the District 5 title and advances to the state tournament with a chance at defending their state title. Roseburg grabbed the boys District 5 title after a 51-pin victory over the Panthers in the finals. South Medford, in only their second year with a bowling team, held the No. 1 slot after semifinal play but fell to the Indians, which downed Grants Pass, 334-321, in the previous match. The Indians, along with South and the Cavemen advance to the 32-team state tournament held at 20th Century Lanes in Portland on March 10-11. The Ashland girls, who along with Grants Pass and Roseburg advanced to the state tournament, downed the Cavers, 386-368, in the finals after Grants Pass beat out Roseburg in their previous match, 340-319.
