John Charles Saubert, of Sauk Village, Ill., is scheduled to change his plea and be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. in U.S. District Court in Medford on a charge of interfering with an agency function. According to a criminal complaint filed by National Park Service Ranger Shane Rogers, rangers were called to the Mazama dorms at Crater Lake National Park the evening of Sept. 23 after a concessions contractor asked them to speak with Saubert, a former employee who had just been fired for multiple alcohol-related incidents. Saubert was allegedly still drinking when the rangers contacted him at his dorm. "Saubert had blood shot and glassy eyes, and the odor of alcoholic beverage could be smelt from several feet away when (he) spoke," Rogers wrote. When rangers attempted to arrest Saubert for public intoxication, he allegedly broke free from their grasp, striking one in the face and knocking another into his patrol vehicle. Rogers wrote that after Saubert was finally handcuffed and restrained with a belly chain, he grew increasingly violent inside their patrol vehicle, at various points yelling that he would shoot them in the head and kill their families. The rangers had to use their Tasers to deter Saubert from trying to escape from the vehicle, but he was ultimately lodged in the Jackson County Jail without further incident.
