Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 22, 2005 Theis tosses five TDs in win KLAMATH FALLS — Crater overcame a rocky start to roll past Klamath Union, 42-21, in a nonconference game Friday night. The Comets fell behind 14-0 against the Pelicans’ fly offense but regrouped to score 42 unanswered points. "We came out pretty flat and I think we were a little bit overconfident," said Crater coach John Beck. "Give KU credit. We had some poor tackling and they were able to go over the top on us." Tory Snyder scooted 52 yards for a score, then hit Mark Brooks on a 66-yard touchdown pass to give Klamath the early lead. But the Comets (4-4 overall) answered with a Callan Hartzer 18-yard TD burst and a 24-yard scoring strike from Brian Theis to Tyler Davis to pull within 14-13 early in the second quarter. Theis, who finished with 206 yards passing and five touchdowns on 12-of-21 completions, also found Hartzer on a 30-yard TD pass and Cody Clark from 24 yards out to end the half with Crater ahead, 28-14. Advertisement The senior quarterback tossed a 24-yard touchdown to Davis in the third period and Jesse Warren in the fourth to complete the scoring. "Defensively and offensively I think we regrouped and got back to work and executed," said Beck. "I thought the coaches put together a good game plan and the kids went out and executed." Crater held Klamath Union (5-2) to just 60 yards rushing on 26 carries and 215 total yards. The Comets were led by Hartzer’s 138 yards rushing on 14 attempts and 71 yards receiving on four catches. ROSEBURG 27, GRANTS PASS 3 — At Roseburg, quarterback Brett Stephens rushed for two touchdowns and the Roseburg defense held Grants Pass in check in the SOC contest. The Cavemen (3-5, 2-2 SOC) finished with just 130 yards of offense, while Roseburg piled up 220 yards on the ground. David Russell led the seventh-ranked Indians (6-1, 4-0 SOC) with 79 yards rushing on 13 carries. Kyle Loomis booted field goals of 42 and 35 yards to bolster the well-rounded Roseburg attack. Southern Cascade League CASCADE CHRISTIAN 54, CHILOQUIN 6 — At Chiloquin, junior quarterback Josh Davis passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as sixth-ranked Cascade Christian remained undefeated. The Challengers (7-0, 5-0 SCL) went 70 yards on nine plays to score on their first possession. Danny Sha capped the drive with an 18-yard run with 9:02 left in the first quarter. A Jordan Ockunzzi fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff at the Chiloquin 35 set up Cascade’s next score. Freshman Daniel Kinney’s 3-yard TD run finished a four-play drive. Davis scored on a 2-yard run at the end of the opening quarter and a Davis to Jordan Burchfiel pass on the two-point conversion gave the Challengers a 20-0 lead. In the second quarter, Davis hooked up with Josh Heidegger on touchdown passes of 37 and 52 yards and connected with Preston Wipf for a 54-yard scoring strike. Cascade Christian rushed for 338 yards, with Burchfiel gaining a team-high 93 yards on 10 carries. Davis was 4-of-5 passing for 178 yards. Chiloquin was limited to 142 total yards and six first downs. Yeust, a quarterback, piled up 237 yards on 10 carries, including breakaway scores of 52, 73 and 80 yards. Chris Stephenson led Butte Falls with six catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns — both thrown by Dillon Ross — and 60 yards on the ground. Ross rushed for 109 yards on 24 carries for the Loggers (3-3 Sky A). Prospect (6-1 Sky A) went ahead 30-0 after the first quarter behind three Swearingen touchdowns, including a 75-yard run and a 60-yard punt return. Swearingen, who finished with 232 yards on nine rushes, also shredded North Lake’s defense in the second half, scoring on a 70-yard run, a 75-yard kickoff return and a 55-yard touchdown catch. The Cougars also got help from Brandon Bailey, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and Devon Zeller, who celebrated his 18th birthday by reaching the end zone twice.
