South Medford opens season on winning note South Medford finally got its boys basketball season going, but only in fits and starts. The Panthers went to the free-throw line 37 times - and made 32 - in downing Mountain View 58-49 Friday in non-conference action at South Medford High. "It was difficult for us to get anything going," said Panthers coach Dennis Murphy. "They're a very good basketball team. They're very physical, and they play extremely hard." The Cougars, led by 6-foot-8, 230-pound Brandon Yon, outrebounded South 34-28 and had a 16-7 edge at the offensive end. The Panthers took the lead for good at the end of the first quarter, 14-13, and kept it largely because of outstanding shooting from the line. Ryan Heil made 10-of-11 free throws and scored 13 points. Eric Fiegi led the Panthers with 17 points, including 7-of-8 from the line. Heil, the subject of a box-and-one defense that had a Cougar chasing him everywhere, was only 1-of-4 from the field. "They did a great job of controlling the tempo," said Murphy, adding that the defensive ploy caught his team off guard. "That was my fault that we didn't do well against it." Alan Johnson scored 10 for South, Boomer Marshall had seven rebounds and three steals and Heil seven assists. Yon had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Grayson Tenney added 13 points and Skyler Ashbaugh 11. Crescent Valley made 10-of-14 3-pointers in the first half and led by as many as 25 points in the second quarter.
