Zielony sisters lift St. Mary's over Bonanza Bonanza did its best to strip away the No. 1 state playoff seed from the St. Mary's High volleyball team Saturday, but the Crusaders did what they always do when things get tight: they went to the Zielony sisters. Senior outside hitter Maren Zielony registered 22 digs and 11 kills and junior middle Kristen Zielony had 24 digs, nine kills, six aces and a career-high eight blocks as the Crusaders rallied for a 15-17, 15-11, 15-3 victory. The win secured the No. 1 state playoff seed from the Southern Cascade League for the Crusaders. They'll play their first match in the Class 2A state tournament at Lane Community College in Eugene Thursday at 2 p.m. against an undetermined opponent. After squandering a 12-6 lead in the first game, the Crusaders nearly gave up a 13-3 lead in the second. But the Zielony sisters sparked the comeback as St. Mary's, the No. 1-ranked Class 2A team in the state, improved its record to 29-3. "We put in a bunch of new plays this week in practice and our communication wasn't the best," St. Mary's coach James Joy said. ``But our serving was very tough in the third game and fairly tough the whole match." The two teams had one rally that lasted nearly two minutes, drawing a standing ovation from the fans. Junior defensive specialist Jenny Gritsch had a career-high 20 digs and junior setter Lani Brophy contributed 35 assists to go with six kills.
