Talk: Hot Springs Trail Sunday, April 24: Ashland author and long-distance hiker Aria Zoner will talk about an adventure he’s pioneered and written about, which he calls “the world's longest therapeutic trail." He'll share why he thinks the trail is important enough to be a National Scenic Trail. Zoner plans to walk its entire 2,370-mile length beginning May 1. A petition asking for the designation for this trail can be found at www.change.org/p/president-of-the-united-states-the-hot-springs-national-scenic-trail . Table Rocks hikes Saturday, April 23: Lower Table Rock, 8 a.m. Local bird experts Bob Quaccia of the Audubon Society and Frank Lospalluto of Klamath Bird Observatory will lead a hike to view spring birds of the Table Rocks. Kramer will lead participants on a guided exploration of the remains of the Camp White artillery range, which includes pillboxes designed to practice infantry drills. Because there is no trail, wear sturdy shoes and long pants. Limited to 15 people. Sunday, May 1: 9 a.m., Lower Table Rock, "Tribal History & Culture." Robert Kentta of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians will discuss the history and culture of ancestral tribes who were moved from the Rogue Valley and other parts of Western Oregon to the Siletz Reservation. Soda Mountain Wilderness Council hike Sunday, May 1: Ornithologist Pepper Trail will lead a hike to explore the canyons, oak parkland and gallery forests of lower Scotch and Slide creeks in the Horseshoe Ranch Wildlife Area north of Iron Gate Reservoir and just south of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, Soda Mountain Wilderness and Oregon/California border. The wildflowers should be very nice. Moderate hiking difficulty depending on the group — and some shallow stream crossings. Email [email protected] to sign up, learn 8 a.m. meeting point in Ashland for carpool, and get more info. Southern Oregon Land Conservancy hikes These free hikes may fill quickly, but SOLC encourages people to get on the waiting list, because cancellations are common. Saturday, April 23: Rogue River Preserve ecology, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Walk the oak woodlands, vernal pools and an impressive riparian forest along the Rogue River near Eagle Point with one of the most popular hike guides in our region, Tom Atzet. Thursday, April 28: Cascade foothills flowers, 4 to 6:30 p.m. The city of Ashland’s Imperatrice property, east of Ashland in the Cascade foothills, is an 825-acre parcel with grassland flowers, views of the southern Bear Creek Valley, and a rare breeding colony of grasshopper sparrows. Botanist and SOLC staffer Kristi Mergenthaler will lead a late-afternoon, moderately strenuous hike on a rough trail. Sunday, May 8: This hike to the city of Ashland’s Imperatrice property, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be a longer and more strenuous hike than the April visit, and the group will visit the oak woodland on the ridge. Saturday, May 14: Rogue River Preserve natural history, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Naturalist Dave Garcia will lead a hike on this property north of Eagle Point. This hike will visit the property's northern river access point. Sunday, May 15: Oredson-Todd Woods ecology, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oredson-Todd Woods is a forested community gem above Ashland. Forest ecologist Tom Atzet will lead a hike in this conserved Ashland city park and share the ecology of the woods. Siskiyou Velo Club Every Saturday: Velo Melo meets at various places and rides about 20 miles at 11 to 13 mph. No one will be dropped. Call Ginny Jensen at 541-488-1398. Every Saturday: Siskiyou Velo Slo-Mo rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. Pace: 7 to 10 mph over 12 to 18 miles on mostly flat terrain. Call Ken Kelley at 541-857-6819. Every Saturday: Siskiyou Crank It Up rides begin at various morning hours from different locations; 20 to 30 miles. Pace 12 to 15 mph, varied terrain. No one will be dropped.
