Kayla Eichamer was credited with two goals — one was an own goal — as St. Mary’s improved to 3-2 in district play and 6-2-1 overall. Illness and conflicts left the Crusaders with only 12 players. "We moved a lot of people around," said St. Mary’s coach Suzanne Irons, "and the girls really came through and pulled together. We had different people playing different positions, but they seemed to do just fine." Kendra Gritsch proved to be a sparkplug on outside defense, both at her own position and filling the void when sweeper Liz Tribelhorn pulled out to cover an opponent. "She saved us quite a few times," said Irons. "Kenny would come in and cover the middle, and if the other team tried to cross, she was there. On her own side, she was just unpassable. She did a great job." Eichamer opened the scoring for the Crusaders a little more than three minutes into the game when she took a dandy of a cross from Tribelhorn and scored. Rogue River knotted it at the 10-minute mark on a Christina Malara score, but Erin Chamberlain’s penalty kick put St. Mary’s in front 2-1 at halftime. The Crusaders’ third goal came on a fine individual effort by Katie MacDiarmid, who took a pass from Chamberlain at midfield, dribbled around three defenders and powered in a shot from 16 yards. Eichamer’s own goal closed the scoring. St. Mary’s had 25 shots to Rogue River’s nine. PHOENIX 7, MAZAMA 0 — At Talent, Kat Cox registered a hat trick and Larrisa Wiltrout added a pair of goals to fuel Phoenix to the District 6 rout. The Pirates led 6-0 at halftime as they cruised to their fifth District 6 victory in as many matches and improved to 7-4 overall. Kelly Singleton and Mara Supan connected for the Pirates’ other two goals. For Supan, the Pirates’ starting central defender, the goal was the first of her varsity career. Cox added two assists while Kelly Riley, Ema Burr and Ashley Novak added one apiece for the Pirates, who amassed a 41-0 shots-on-goal advantage and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks. Mazama fell to 0-5 in league play. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 4, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — In an exhibition of sharing the wealth, Cascade Christian received goals from four different sources at Hawthorne Park. Crystal Humphries, on a solo effort, picked up the game’s first goal from just outside the box in the opening minute. Seven minutes later, teammate Jessica Tresser scored on an assist from Julie Pederson. Chelsea Winner scored in the 34th minute to give Cascade Christian (6-3, 3-2 District 6) a 3-0 lead at the half. Pedersen provided the final score in the 64th minute on an assist from Winner. HENLEY 5, SUTHERLIN 0 — At Sutherlin, Heather Olliffe and Becky Schwartz each scored two goals in the first half as Henley (6-2-1, 3-1 District 6) tuned up for a key league matchup Thursday at front-runner Phoenix. Jill Mathis’ goal after intermission completed the scoring in the non-conference game. Henley freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Hornbeck registered the shutout. Henley outshot the Bulldogs, 20-7. Skyline Boys HIDDEN VALLEY 5, MAZAMA 0 — At Klamath Falls, Daron McGlothlin scored Hidden Valley’s first two goals and assisted on the first two of Dillon Borta’s three second- period goals. Borta has 23 goals and five hat tricks on the season. McGlothlin tallied the only first-half goal off an assist from Danny Richard at the 23rd minute. McGlothlin scored off an assist from Borta 19 minutes into the second half before Borta found the scoring touch. Scott Swearingen picked up his first assist of the season on Borta’s last goal. Junior goalkeeper Jake Supola posted his fourth shutout of the season. Hidden Valley (6-4, 6-2 Skyline) outshot Mazama, 23-5. NORTH VALLEY 4, ROGUE RIVER 1 — At Merlin, North Valley senior forward J.B. Handley scored two first-half goals and got fouled in the box for a Knights’ penalty kick that led to the fourth goal. Robert Navarro opened the scoring for North Valley (7-5, 6-3 District 6) on an unassisted goal in the 11th minute. Handley scored the next two goals to complete the first-half scoring. Kristof Handke, a German foreign exchange student, assisted on both. The Knights increased their lead to 4-0 11 minutes into the second period when Handley was fouled in the box. Brian King converted on the penalty kick. In the 75th minute, Eric Valencia scored for Rogue River (0-8, 0-8 Skyline) off an assist by Jed Dunlop. Sophomore defender Ben Maue helped limit Rogue River to just three shots, while North Valley took 21.
