I was recently at the Takelma boat ramp at Lost Creek Lake, and the dock was not there. Can't help but wonder whether this is a temporary or permanent change? When it gets busy there, it could get interesting. — Eric H., Medford Not seeing that dock at the lake's popular and important Takelma boat ramp would make any Lost Creek Lake boater worry a bit. But the Since You Asked team has been able to get to the bottom of what's happening at the lake's only low-water boat access. The ramp had fallen into such disrepair that it posed a safety problem for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, says David Tucker, the Corps' operation section chief at the facility near Trail. The Corps doesn't have the money to replace it, so maintenance crews removed it about a month ago and have been carving out time to work on repairing it themselves, Tucker says. "We're setting aside some of our routine maintenance to do it," Tucker says. "We know it's a significant feature the public uses and relies on." Tucker says he hopes the dock will be up and usable by April 20. That dock is important for tow boats and other boats to launch and tie off on the dock while parking vehicles. It slides up and down in the water column, so it is operational at all water levels. The ramp also extends far deeper into the reservoir than the ramps at Lost Creek Lake Marina at Stewart State Park, so it gets heavy use in low-water years such as the past two years. This year, however, the lake is filling on schedule thanks to plenty of rain and a bulky snowpack. The lake was listed Thursday at 7 feet from full.
