Email Story to a Friend July 3, 2006 Mustangs slug way to tourney title YAKIMA, Wash. — In his only tournament appearance, Atlanta Braves draft pick Cole Rohrbough had five strikeouts in 41„3 innings to help the Medford Mustangs American Legion AAA baseball team beat Yakima 11-9 in the championship game of the Yakima Firecracker Tournament. Rohrbough, who was named most outstanding pitcher, improved to 3-0 with the win. The Mustangs (24-2) lit up Clemson University-bound Andrew Clauson for eight runs on only four hits in the first inning before he was relieved with two outs. Tournament MVP Abe Eubank began the inning with a bases-loaded, two-run single to right field. Dustin Smith and Ryan Augino drove in two runs apiece on singles in the inning to give the Mustangs an 8-0 lead. The Beetles (20-7) cut the lead to 8-7 after three, but the Mustangs held on by notching a run in each of the next three innings. Advertisement Smith, who was named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Logan Boyd, went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Eubank, who drove in 15 runs over the five-game stretch, was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the title game. Augino and Justin Meyer each went 2-for-4. NORTH MEDFORD WINS TOURNAMENT — At Roseburg, Andrew Jones allowed six hits in the complete-game effort as the North Medford Mavericks slipped by the South Medford Colts 2-1 in the championship game of the six-team Fourth of July Tournament. The Mavericks, who completed the tournament 5-0, got an RBI triple from Jordon Bostwick to score Zack Earle in the fifth inning for the go-ahead run. Jones walked just one batter and got plenty of defensive support to record his third win in as many decisions. North Medford left fielder Blake Mitchell robbed South's Jared Smith of a hit with a diving catch of a line drive in the sixth inning. South Medford, which finished 3-2 at the tournament, went ahead 1-0 on a two-out RBI single from Taylor Comford in the third. North Medford (21-5) tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Hayden Wolfe scored on a fielder's choice groundout by Aaron Marlia. The Mavericks advanced to Sunday's title game by winning two games Saturday against Roseburg Horizon and Roseburg Stars. Jared Imhausen was the winning pitcher in both contests. He came on in relief to lead North Medford to an 11-2 win over Roseburg Stars and pitched six innings as a starter in the Mavericks' 9-4 triumph over Horizon. Shea Bedortha and Colin Sowers each had two RBIs against Roseburg Stars, while Tyler Lake went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs and Bostwick was 4-for-4 with three RBIs against Roseburg Horizon. GRANTS PASS 8, BROOKINGS 3 — At Florence, Cory Staniforth pitched a complete game with a 4-for-4 effort from the plate to help the Grants Pass Nuggets defuse the Brookings Bombers at the Lechateau Wood Bat Classic. Staniforth allowed eight hits over six innings and struck out five while driving in a pair of runs and scoring twice. Mike Mills' three-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 3-all tie and helped the Nuggets (15-10) pull away for the victory. Little League Baseball AGE 11-12 DISTRICT 8 TOURNAMENT — At Central Point, Medford National West belted seven home runs to cruise by Illinois Valley 17-0 in pool play. Ryan Wellock tossed a two-hitter and hit two home runs for Medford. Teammate Nathan Namanny smacked three homers and had five RBIs, while Desmond Harrington ripped a solo shot and Cooper Wolf legged out an inside-the-park home run. Medford (2-1), which secured a berth in Wednesday's semifinal round, completes pool play today against Gold Valley. Also in pool play, Medford National Central improved to 3-0 with a 13-3 victory in four innings over Central Point. Jack Walker and Tyler Gould each went 3-for-3, with Walker providing two doubles and three RBIs. Kevin Hoyt and Austin Reames added two hits apiece, while Joe Cooney smacked a three-run home run. Reames struck out five and gave up two hits to notch the pitching win. Medford National Central plays Grants Pass National today in pool play. AGE 10-11 DISTRICT 8 TOURNAMENT — At Central Point, Grants Pass National eliminated Medford National Central by rallying for a 9-6 victory in a semifinal game. Grants Pass moves on to play Central Point in the championship contest tonight at 8. Daniel Scottow went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs to lead Medford. Jake McCoy struck out six in three innings of relief pitching for Medford (3-3). Softball COMETS WIN STATE TITLE — At Eugene, the 12U Haga Comets softball team capped an unbeaten run with a 13-5 victory over the Forest Grove Rampage in the championship game of the 12-and-under B State Championships. With the win, the Comets qualify for the national tournament held in Irving, Texas, later this month. The Comets, who outscored their opponents 63-11 during the 6-0 run at state, also defeated North Medford (9-3) and Forest Grove (8-0) earlier Sunday. Forest Grove beat Tualatin to earn a rematch with the Comets in the title game. In the championship contest, Renee Murphy, who shared pitching duties with Haley Fox, sparked a nine-run, first-inning surge with a three-run triple.
