Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 12, 2005 Ashland bank robbed; thief stays at large By JENNIFER SQUIRES for the Mail Tribune ASHLAND — A man claiming to have a gun robbed the downtown U.S. Bank on Thursday afternoon. The man told a teller at the Ashland bank he had a gun in his pocket and demanded cash, witnesses said. "He was right next to me," said customer Michele Fecteau, an Ashland beauty specialist. The teller handed over money, Fecteau said. Ashland police said the robber escaped with an undiclosed amount of cash. Police describe the suspect as a thin-built, 6-foot-tall white man, approximately 25-years-old, with blond hair wearing blue coveralls and a blue knit cap pulled down over his eyes. He was reported to have been wearing dark-colored athletic-type shoes. The man fled north from the bank on foot, Selby said. He was last seen running down an alley in the area between C and B streets, between Second and Third streets, police said. Advertisement Ashland police, two Oregon State Police troopers, an FBI agent and four officers from Medford, plus a police dog, scoured Ashland streets for the suspect all afternoon. APD released a statewide bulletin asking other law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the suspect, who may be associated with two men driving a "very dirty" white Mazda hatchback, Selby said. "Somebody saw them together earlier in the day," Selby said. "They’ve been seen in a number of places throughout Ashland today." The bank was closed for the afternoon while investigators interviewed witnesses. Customers were directed to U.S. Bank branches in north and south Medford. The bank is expected to reopen today. The U.S. Bank branch, at Second Street and Lithia Way, also was robbed on Dec. 24, 2002. In December, Ashland resident Nathaniel Bosworth, 22 at the time of the robbery, pleaded guilty to the Ashland heist and a Nov. 19, 2002, robbery of the Klamath First Federal bank (now Sterling Savings Bank) at 512 Walker Ave. in Ashland.
