PREP SOFTBALL Marist halts EP's winning streak Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 3, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 3, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News EAGLE POINT — Marist senior pitcher Shawna Burke kept Eagle Point at bay for the most part and errors hindered the Eagles’ cause as their five-game winning streak was snapped in 7-1, 7-4 Midwestern League softball losses at Eagle Point High. Burke limited Eagle Point (14-4, 8-4 MWL) to five hits in the opener, then avoided too much damage after allowing nine hits in the nightcap. She also had two hits in each game for the Spartans (17-4, 11-3), who are tied for first place in the league with Churchill. Eagle Point sophomore Megan Ayres matched Burke with 10 strikeouts in Game 1 in her four-hitter, but five errors proved to be the team’s undoing. In Game 2, Ayres struck out three and allowed six hits with four errors behind her. Burke fanned nine in Game 2. Kylene Briggs had two hits to lead EP in the opener, with Kaylie Meerten doubling in the first and scoring on an RBI single by Ayres. In Game 2, Briggs had three hits and scored twice, while Ayres added two hits and two RBIs. Tiffani Mitchell and Shaelynn Grady each drove in a run for the Eagles. CHURCHILL 4-7, CRATER 3-9: At Eugene, Crater surged out to an early lead in Game 2 to earn a split during Midwestern League action. Mackenzie Ryerson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Abbi Pearce 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Tristin Fisher 2-for-4 in the second game for the Comets, who led 5-0 until the fourth inning. Ryerson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run in Game 1, when Crater raced out to a 3-0 lead before Churchill scored a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. ROSEBURG 9-3, GRANTS PASS 1-5: At Roseburg, Grants Pass split its Southwest Conference doubleheader to move into a tie for first place with North Medford. Nicole Godwin was 2-for-3 and Danielle Taylor had an RBI double in the opener. Taylor hit a two-run home run in the first inning of Game 2 for the Cavers (18-2, 13-2 SWC). DeChenne was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Kite 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Gabby Edwards finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Knights in Game 2. Phoenix used a three-run fourth inning to take a 7-5 lead and held on behind the pitching of Bailee Tally (8-10, 4-5 Sky). In Game 1, the Cougars rallied from a 6-1 deficit to tie the game on Marissa Raines' RBI double in the sixth inning but Lost River (6-6, 5-3) won it in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by Alexandra Pena.
