Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 22, 2005 Sheldon holds off pesky Tornado, 51-48 Boys Basketball Roundup EUGENE — North Medford had to be considered a heavy underdog in its nonconference boys basketball game against Sheldon on Wednesday night. But the Black Tornado fought the highly-regarded Irish on even terms through most of the game before absorbing a 51-48 defeat. Blake Pool, a 6-4 junior post, tallied a game-high 16 points for Sheldon (7-1), which is expected to contend for the Midwestern League title this winter. Freshman shooting guard Jordan Ellis and senior forward Eric Stroh each had 10 points to lead the Tornado (2-5). North Medford suffered nine turnovers in the first quarter that helped Sheldon grab an 11-4 lead. But the Tornado cut the gap to 23-19 at halftime and then, fueled by a 3-point basket by sophomore point guard Michael Williams and back-to-back inside baskets by senior forward Abe Eubank, took a 29-26 lead. Advertisement But then Sheldon went on a 13-0 run and held the lead the rest of the way. "I’m real proud of the way the kids battled back after a rough start," North Medford coach Tim Sam said. "If you looked at records and common opponents I’m sure not many people gave us a chance to win this game. But we were right in it, and with another break or two, we could have won it." The Irish’s third-period spurt gave them a 41-29 lead, but North Medford used a fullcourt press and all-around hustle in the fourth quarter to crawl back into contention one last time. "We had some wide-open looks from the 3-point line in the fourth quarter and just couldn’t knock one down," Sam said. "But this team has come a long way in a short amount of time." Heidegger, who had 20 points at halftime, added 12 rebounds and five assists. The Challengers (6-2) will play Umpqua Valley Christian tonight at 6:30 in the championship game. Chris Buck added 11 points and Daniel Sha 10 for Cascade Christian. Josh Smith led the way defensively for the Challengers, taking three charges.
