Crater stays unbeaten with MWL win Sep 20, 2014 12:00 AM A A EAGLE POINT — After undefeated Crater dropped it first game of the season during a Midwestern League volleyball match against Churchill Friday, coach Leaf Jensen had to refocus his squad. Jensen's pep talk worked as the Comets regrouped after a second-set loss to post a 25-13, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20 victory over the Lancers. "We just got nervous having not lost a game so far this year," said Jensen, "and were in a little shock. It was the first time our serve receive let us down. We're not that big. If we don't pass well, we don't have a lot of opportunity for kills." In the third set, the Comets (9-0, 3-0 MWL) reversed the momentum. "We got off to a quick start," said Jensen. "We passed better and served tough and put a lot of pressure on them." As she's done all year, Paige Berriochoa came through in a big way. The senior middle blocker accounted for 17 kills, 18 digs and three blocks. "She's been unbelievable all season," said Jensen. "She's hitting amazing and digging everything." Destiny Fahndrich, a junior outside, added seven kills, 24 digs and four aces. Despite being hobbled with an ankle injury, Kelsey Strouse, a senior outside, put down 13 kills to go with 12 digs. Other leaders for Crater were setter Nicole Davis (43 assists) and libero Lainey Jensen (17 digs). "We dug a ton of ball," said Jensen, whose team had 89 for the match. CHURCHILL 3, EAGLE POINT 0: At Eagle Point, visiting Churchill romped to a 27-25, 25-17, 25-16 victory in MWL action. The Eagles rallied from a 24-18 deficit in the first set to tie the score 24-all but struggled from there. Eagle Point (1-8, 1-3 MWL) was led by Kylene Briggs, a junior outside, with 13 digs, six kills and three blocks. Kayline Murdoch, a senior middle, contributed five kills and three blocks while libero Camryn Shumate came up with 19 digs. HOSANNA CHRISTIAN 3, PROSPECT 0: At Klamath Falls, Hosanna Christian won the Mountain Valley League match in straight sets, 25-1, 25-8, 25-6. Hosanna improved to 3-0 in league and 5-1 overall while Prospect dropped to 1-4 in the MVL and 2-5 on the season.
