Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 25, 2005 Police arrest vehicle-theft suspect By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune An alleged vehicle-theft spree has landed a Medford man back in a familiar place — the Jackson County Jail. Bobby Shane Charlton, 29, was arraigned Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court on two felony charges of unlawful use of a vehicle. Charlton was arrested Tuesday night. A Medford police officer drove past the suspect, who was driving a 1994 Dodge pickup that had been reported stolen only minutes before, said police Lt. Mike Moran. Officer Dave Plummer "saw the car as he headed out to take the (stolen-vehicle) report," said police Lt. Tim George. The West 11th Street resident who said his truck had been taken told police he had a loaded 9 mm handgun in the vehicle, but Plummer did not find the weapon during an inventory search of the Dodge, Moran said. Officers went to Charlton’s home in the 1000 block of Garfield Avenue, where the handgun was found during a search. A second stolen pickup also was located at the residence, police said. Advertisement That vehicle, a 1994 Dodge Ram 350, had been reported stolen Tuesday morning by a Central Point resident. The truck’s owner told police that nearly $10,000 in tools and equipment was in a utility box when the vehicle was taken, but those items weren’t there when Plummer checked it, officials said. Plummer did locate the keys to a third stolen vehicle inside the Dodge Ram. Police said Charlton also was in possession of a bag with evidence of a fourth vehicle theft. Additionally, a green pickup found parked at Charlton’s home had been reported stolen Wednesday morning, police said. The investigation is continuing, with the possibility of further charges against Charlton. "It’s safe to say this is a case that will involve a little more leg work," George said. For now, Charlton is being held in jail on $25,000 bail. His prior criminal record includes felony convictions in Jackson County on charges including third-degree robbery, methamphetamine possession, first-degree burglary, first-degree theft, third-degree assault and vehicle theft, according to court records.
