Authorities found the wreckage between Scappoose Bay and the Columbia River channel south of St. Helens, said Jay Tappan, spokesman for the Columbia River Fire and Rescue. "We are getting ready to do a four-body excavation here," he said. The names of those on board the plane were not immediately released. Rescuers paddled to the crash site in a kayak, while paramedics were trying to cross the swamp in a sheriff’s boat, Tappan said. The single-engine Beech Bonanza airplane was flying from Arlington, Wash., to Fresno, Calif., with a fueling stop in Medford, said Steve McCreary of the National Transportation Safety Board in Seattle. The plane was registered to Philip T. Brewer of Everett, Wash., according to Federal Aviation Administration records. Advertisement Pilots in the area said visibility was poor Tuesday morning. "We did have several people in the area that had heard an airplane with what they described as engine problems," Tappan said. The crash came just over a month after another small plane crashed while landing at Scappoose airport. The twin-engine plane crashed Oct. 18, killing James Gillespie, 72, and Jessie Gillespie, 73, of Steilacoom, Wash.
