The 17-year-old terrier-dachshund mix returned to his owner’s house 2½ hours after being hauled away by a coyote Sept. 8, but a neck wound suffered in the attack led to his demise. Stanley’s punctured esophagus caused his body cavity to fill slowly with air, said Ann Schroeder, the dog’s owner. The dog’s weak heart made successful surgery highly unlikely, so the Schroeders chose to have Stanley euthanized Tuesday at a veterinary clinic. "He had to be put down or suffer a terrible, terrible death," Schroeder said. "It’s a sad, sad day." The wiry-haired wiener previously had survived cancer, a mauling by a German shepherd and an accident in which he was run over by pickup truck — with a front and back tire both rolling over his body. He gained notoriety two weeks ago in a Mail Tribune story chronicling how he was grabbed by a coyote and carried away while he and Schroeder were on a walk down their rural driveway. But Stanley somehow escaped his captor, wandering home later that day. While he appeared to have healed well and regained some of his feistiness, the esophageal problem surfaced last weekend, Schroeder said.
