Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 12, 2005 No. 2-ranked Ashland outlasts South Medford SOC Volleyball ASHLAND — Ashland kept its unbeaten record in the Southern Oregon Conference intact, but not before a veteran South Medford volleyball team gave the second-ranked Grizzlies all they wanted Tuesday. Ashland improved to 10-0 in the conference and 18-1 overall in a five-game tussle, 25-15, 18-25, 25-12, 20-25, 15-9. South Medford is one of five teams vying for the playoffs behind the Grizzlies. The Panthers dropped to 8-9 overall, 5-5 in the SOC. "They’re a senior-laden team," said Ashland coach Josh Rohlfing. "They did a nice job of setting the pace, a nice job of slowing it down when they needed to slow it down and just doing the things that seniors do." It wasn’t until the fifth game, when Ashland, behind the stellar play of Maddison Thivierge and Ruby Stocking, emerged from a 5-5 deadlock, pulled ahead, was nearly caught again, then finished off the Panthers. After South closed to within 10-9, Stocking served four straight points to finish the match. Advertisement Thivierge, a junior middle blocker, had three kills and a block "that was pretty decisive," said Rohlfing. "She did some fantastic things." For the match, Thivierge had 16 kills and 4½ blocks. She also came up big in Game 3 as Ashland again attempted to take control. "I felt like Maddison set the tone in that game and just really took charge," said Rohlfing. "She stepped it up and pushed the game to our level. She just kind of controlled the net." Both teams went as their serving went, said Rohlfing, and it was the Panthers’ strong suit as they knotted the match with a Game 4 win. Jessica Walters tallied 14 kills, seven digs and an ace for Ashland, and Natalie Lefler had 19 digs and five aces. Other Grizzlies with fine stat lines were: Sarah Holgen, 15 digs, 10 kills, two aces; Lindsey Stone, 39 assists, 10 digs; and Stocking, 16 digs, five kills, two aces. South’s Peggy Thompson had 12 kills and 21 digs, Marissa Towry had 12 kills, Chenoa Coviare had four blocks, Emily Marshall four aces and Simone Hubbard 36 assists. "We didn’t worry about the score," said South coach Adam Wagman, "we just worried about playing at our level. Even when we were struggling in the first and third games, we didn’t get down on ourselves. We still fought for points when they were making big runs, and that helped us in the second and fourth games." NORTH MEDFORD 3, CRATER 1 — At Central Point, North Medford’s Lauren Berger had eight kills and a season-high 13 blocks in the 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-16 SOC victory. Crater rallied from two six-point deficits to win the opening game but North rebounded with three straight victories. Erica Schultz sparked a seven-point run from the service line in Game 2 for the Black Tornado (15-10, 6-4 SOC) and Natalie Lorenz served up four aces that led to a six-point swing and a 13-4 lead in Game 4. Heidi Siebenlist led the Tornado with 15 assists, while Rebecca Treger had 19 digs, Jenna Dohren contributed 17 digs and Schultz had seven kills with only one error and three service aces. Haley Hevern led Crater (2-8 SOC) with 31 digs and nine kills. Reanne Allen had 12 digs, Randi Salyer dished 29 assists and Kirstin Davidson pounded out nine kills. ROSEBURG 3, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Roseburg, Eagle Point had a good serving night, missing only twice, but Roseburg’s strong attack led to a 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 SOC victory. Roseburg is 7-3 in the SOC, Eagle Point 3-7. Mickie Burns notched 11 kills and seven digs for the Eagles, Beth Logan had seven kills and seven digs and Arlisa Hoffman contributed 13 digs. For Roseburg, Emily Waldron had 18 kills and Kalista Harrison had 12. Shannon Miller amassed 33 kills, and Tasha Bishop had four digs. GRANTS PASS 3, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Grants Pass, freshman middle Natasha Torgerson had a team-high eight kills and only one hitting error to spark Grants Pass to a 25-6, 25-12, 25-13 SOC victory. It was the Cavers’ (7-3 SOC) sixth win in their last seven league matches. Senior outside Kim Gonzales, who sat out the third game, added five kills, and freshman defensive specialist Karleigh Prestianni had eight digs to go with three aces. Grants Pass senior setter Justine Hix contributed six digs and two aces.
