Mark Andrew Dahlin, 28, of the 1200 block of Maple Park Drive in Medford, was indicted this week on a charge of second-degree assault. If convicted, he faces a minimum prison sentence of five years and 10 months under Oregon’s tough-on-crime law, Measure 11. The son of Lewis Dahlin, Jackson County’s chief deputy district attorney for 12 years, Mark Dahlin will be prosecuted by the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office. The case was turned over to avoid any conflict of interest, said Jackson County District Attorney Mark Huddleston. "It just seemed better to me to let another DA’s office deal with it," Huddleston said, refusing to discuss the case further. Advertisement Lewis Dahlin supported Huddleston’s opponent, Jim Wallan, in a 1996 election for district attorney. Dahlin has a civil law practice in Medford. Police arrested Mark Dahlin following a fight at his neighbor’s house the afternoon of Nov. 3, said Capt. Joe Puckett of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Dahlin and Blake Lee were arguing about a woman when Dahlin hit Lee several times with a 1-inch diameter metal pipe, Puckett said. Dahlin stopped hitting Lee, who fell to the ground, when the woman threw a pot of coffee at Dahlin, Puckett added. Lee was taken to Providence Medford Medical Center, where he was treated for injuries to his head, back and legs, Puckett said. Dahlin was released from the Jackson County Jail last week, and no date has been set for his court appearance on the assault allegations. Jackson County Circuit Court judges Ray White and Bill Purdy are excused from hearing the case, according to court records. White is a former deputy district attorney while Purdy and Lewis Dahlin were partners in the same law firm.
