Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Mustangs hold off North Jackson Both teams use the non-conference game as a tune-up for next week’s state tournaments EAGLE POINT — Ron Depuy sailed through the first three innings of Wednesday’s American Legion matchup between his North Jackson Royals and the Medford Mustangs at Eagle Point High. The fourth, however, wasn’t quite as kind to the Eagle Point standout. Depuy’s first pitch of the fourth inning was drag bunted perfectly by Rob Folsom for a leadoff single. His next pitch was handled with a little more distance as Ryan Heil pulled an offering just over the left field fence for a two-run home run, his fourth round-tripper of the summer. That 2-0 lead was held up by the Mustangs, who used seven pitchers to keep North Jackson to only four hits in a 3-1 non-conference victory. Wednesday’s game was added to the schedule to keep both teams fresh as they prepare to host their respective American Legion state tournaments next week. Depuy and Carl Christian limited the Mustangs (39-10) to six hits, with Heil and Matt Skundrick each going 2-for-4 for Medford. Christian also went 2-for-4 for the Royals. North Jackson cut into its deficit with a run in the bottom of the fifth, using a wild pitch by Folsom to plate Tyson Nelson from third base. Undaunted, the Mustangs built their lead back up to two runs when Evan McArthur reached safely on an error, moved to third base on a single by Skundrick and scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Brett Timmerman. The Mustangs open their state tournament at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at Miles Field. Medford will face either David Douglas or Lake Oswego. North Jackson’s state tournament runs Aug. 8-13 at Eagle Point High.
