Kal Kishawi said he and an employee "could smell the gunpowder in the air" when they just missed witnessing the 9:30 a.m. shooting at the Stop 'N Go market where they were supposed to pick up Davies-Calhoun to work in Kishawi's moving business. They then drove down Table Rock Road and Gibbon Road toward Davies-Calhoun's residence when they crossed paths with him along the roadside, already cuffed and being led to a police car by an officer, Kishawi said Tuesday. "Robert says to me, 'Sorry I won't be coming in to work today,' with a grin on his face," Kishawi told the Mail Tribune. "It was really strange." Davies-Calhoun was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on a murder charge for the fatal shooting of Douglas Mitchell Spaur as Spaur sat in his pickup truck in the Stop 'N Go parking lot at 6079 Table Rock Road. At the time of his arrest, Davies-Calhoun was in possession of a handgun that police believe was used in the slaying, police said. Officers at the scene said as many as six shots were fired, but investigators have not confirmed that. Jackson County District Attorney Beth Heckert said she expected Deputy District Attorney Laura Cromwell to present the case to a grand jury later this week. Jackson County Sheriff's investigators have yet to say what, if any, relationship occurred between Davies-Calhoun and Spaur, who both lived off Table Rock Road less than a mile apart from each other in rural Central Point near the Denman Wildlife Area. Kishawi said Davies-Calhoun rented a room in a house on Gem Road, where a woman who answered the door there today declined comment. Art Clinkenbeard, who lives on the opposite end of the dead-end and unpaved Gem Road, said he met Davies-Calhoun once when their mail was misdelivered. Clinkenbeard also said that he saw Spaur driving his blue Ford Ranger pickup down Gem Road several times in recent months but did not know where he was going. "I thought he lived there," Clinkenbeard said. Spaur's family members, contacted at his Elmhurst Street home and in Jackson County Circuit Court, declined to be interviewed. A woman signing business checks in the market this morning said both men were in the Stop 'N Go prior to the shooting and that they did not argue. The woman, who declined to give her name, said she heard the shots but did not see the shooting. Kishawi and a fellow employee were late in their prearranged rendezvous with Davies-Calhoun at the market, where Davies said he wanted to get a drink before work, Kishawi said. When they arrived shortly after the shooting and before police arrived, they could see a bullet hole in the pickup's window, Kishawi said. "My friend said he could smell the gunpowder in the air," Kishawi said. "It didn't make any sense to us what was going on." They left and proceeded down Table Rock Road as police cars sped past them before encountering Davies-Calhoun being arrested, he said. Kishawi said Davies-Calhoun worked for his moving business the past two months, describing him as a "hard worker" who was "a little mentally slow" and had trouble grasping directions. Kishawi said Davies-Calhoun "carried himself well" and never seemed to have problems with other people. Davies-Calhoun always carried a backpack that he would never leave out of his sight unless it was locked up, but Kishawi said he did not know whether Davies-Calhoun carried a gun. Davies-Calhoun's resume contained references to him being a U.S. Navy Seal and a martial arts expert, but his resume did not contain any references with telephone numbers, Kishawi said. Davies-Calhoun's only other arrest in Jackson County occurred in June 2014 while he was being evicted from the Salvation Army's Hope House for homeless people off Crews Road in Medford, court records show. During that eviction, Davies-Calhoun allegedly harassed and interfered with the employee telephoning police when Davies-Calhoun refused to leave the house until he spoke with its director, court documents show. Davies-Calhoun was initially lodged Monday in the Jackson County Jail on warrants for failing to appear on those charges, and the murder charge was added later that day.
