Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 29, 2006 Crater triumphs in tournament HILLSBORO — Depth once again proved to be the difference for the Crater wrestling team. The top-ranked Comets had three individual champions and eight placers overall to claim the team title at the two-day Resers’ Tournament of Champions Saturday at Liberty High. "I think we wrestled pretty well overall as a team," said Crater coach Greg Haga, whose Comets have won the past three state championships. "We’re starting to round into form. It’s a good time, with (Southern Oregon Conference) districts coming up next week." The event boasted eight of the state’s top 10 Class 4A teams and the second-ranked squad from Class 3A in Estacada. The Comets scored 192½ points to blow past second-place Hermiston (151) and third-place Pendleton (130½ ). Individually, Brock Gutches (103 pounds), Jon Bernhardt (145) and Charlie Alexander (275) each won titles. Advertisement Jake Vizzini (125) and Cody Clark (215) both finished second, while Adam Lindgren (140) was third and Andrew VanWey (112) and Tyler Weathers (130) took fourth. Crater’s junior varsity squad also fared well, finishing second by just 1½ points despite having only 10 wrestlers to compete. The SOC district meet begins Friday at North Medford High. TEAMSCORES(TOP 10) — Crater 192½ , Hermiston 151, Pendleton 130½ , Crook County 121, Estacada 120½ , Roseburg 115, Sprague 115, Thurston 109, West Linn 103, Newberg 94½ . Running UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON INDOOR — At Seattle, Crater senior Isaac Stoutenburgh tuned up for a national cross country meet by running the mile and 3,000 meters at the primarily college-level event. Stoutenburgh ran a personal-best time in the mile, finishing fourth in his heat with a time of 4 minutes, 12.96 seconds. It is the seventh best prep time in country this year. Stoutenburgh’s time in the 3,000 (8:32.06) is the second best nationally. Stoutenburgh will run in the U.S. Junior Cross Country championships next month in New York. The eight fastest runners in the 19-and-under meet will make the U.S. team that goes to Japan in April. Hockey NORTH MEDFORD 10, SOUTH MEDFORD 5 — Gianni Assam notched five goals and added an assist to lead North Medford to its fourth win over South Medford in the five-game history of the rivalry at the RRRink. Black Tornado goalie Alex Orr added 42 saves to fend off the Panthers, while counterpart John Adamson had 32 saves in a game that featured 89 shots overall. Duston Fender added three goals and an assist for North, while teammate Phillip Merrill scored his first goal of the season, and Cameron Myers added a goal and an assist. Sam Jossie led the way with four assists, with Andrew DeKorte and Matthew McClure also earning an assist.
