Enoch, Bain share top Skyline honors By KRIS HENRY Seniors Malloree Enoch of Skyline Conference champion North Valley and Jennifer Bain of Hidden Valley shared the league's top individual honor in girls basketball. The two were named co-players of the year, and North Valley's Byron Robertson was coach of the year in voting by the league's coaches. For Bain, the honor was especially rewarding considering the hard work put forth in returning from a knee injury that sidelined her for most of last season. Most noted for her drives to the basket heading into this season, Bain realized over the summer that option might not be her best for her senior campaign. "She knew her knee wouldn't be 100 percent all year so she worked hard on her jump shot and that came through quite well for us this year," said Hidden Valley coach Robby Tate. "She was a very good senior leader." That added weapon helped the 5-foot-8 wing average 13.8 points this past season - 13.2 in league play - in leading the Mustangs to a third-place finish in the Skyline Conference. Hidden Valley also posted a school record 19 wins in finishing 19-7 overall and 10-4 in conference. The injury-riddled Mustangs finished seventh last season with a 3-11 Skyline mark. Joining Bain and Enoch on the first team were Hidden Valley sophomore Shea Ford, North Valley sophomore Elaina Renius and Henley senior Kandice McClung. Although a bit surprised to land two players on the first team after finishing third in the standings, Tate said that was just further proof how balanced the conference was this past season. For her part, Ford already owns the school record for most rebounds in a game (20) and steals in a game (15). She averaged 12.6 points, nine rebounds and almost seven steals per game. "Shea's just an amazing athlete," said Tate. "I still don't think she knows what she's capable of doing. "If she stays healthy, she should break the all-time rebound record and all-time record for steals and points in a career." Defense was the key for Enoch's selection as co-player of the year as well. Not much of an offensive power, Enoch's defensive tenacity made her a force Tate, for one, was proud earned recognition at the all-league coaches meeting. "I was glad to see Jennifer and Malloree get (co-player of the year)," he said. "Malloree is not noted for her offensive abilities but is one heckuva defensive player. She really prides herself on that and it shows. I really admire her for that." Enoch averaged six steals and just over seven points per game for the Knights, who advanced to the state playoffs but lost both of their games. North Valley finished its season 19-5 overall and 13-1 in Skyline play. Skyline Conference All-Stars Player of the year - Jennifer Bain, Hidden Valley, and Malloree Enoch, North Valley.
