Ashland pressure undoes South ASHLAND -- The Ashland Grizzlies have often fallen victim to South Medford's full-court press over the years, but on Friday night the Grizzlies turned the tables. With cat-quick guards Sal Pippa and Kris Pavilionis providing the impetus, the Grizzlies scored 13 straight points in the third period and surged to a 59-55 Southern Oregon Conference victory. "Those two kids have quick hands and quick feet and they did a great job on the press," Ashland assistant coach Marius Boone said. "We got in their face and put the pressure on. It was like a frenzy out there." Jimmy Werbin had 16 points and six rebounds and 6-foot-4 junior post Brett Zundel had 14 points for the Grizzlies, who improved to 2-4 in the Southern Oregon Conference and 7-9 overall. "South was much bigger than us but our kids battled and got the win," Boone said. "If we're going to be in the playoff hunt, this was a game we had to have." Colin Grant had 14 points to pace the Panthers, who fell to 1-4 in the SOC. SOUTH MEDFORD (55) --Hickey 11, Hilgendorf 6, McKay 0, Rasmussen 0, Wallenberg 11, Grant 14, Foster 4, Decker 9, Tomlins 0.
