Medford police said they apprehended 20-year-old Juan Antonio Gonzalez-Marquez, a suspected Norteños gang member, about an hour after the 8:12 p.m. shooting on Prune Street near Union Park. The victim, 22-year-old Alex Adrian Enriquez, remained in critical condition at a Medford hospital after being shot in the upper torso and leg. Investigators said a police officer noticed a vehicle matching the description of the shooting suspect's vehicle — described as a white sedan that was lowered with larger tires, reportedly similar to a Chevrolet Monte Carlo — on Alice Street, then followed it to a parking lot at 677 Beatty St. Gonzalez-Marquez was the only person in the car, which turned out to be a two-door 1992 Oldsmobile. "Once we had that confirmed, we started looking hard at this driver. We interviewed several witnesses, not only at the scene, but several associates on his side that helped with the case," said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau. Detectives obtained search warrants for the car and Gonzalez-Marquez 's home in the 1200 block of West Eighth Street and found evidence tying him to the shooting, police said. Enriquez, of Medford, was reportedly standing on a sidewalk in the 1300 block of Prune Street when he was shot by a driver in a car that passed him as it traveled south, police said. A passerby with prior military combat experience was able to render some aid, as he had medical supplies with him, police said. The gun from the shooting had not been recovered Wednesday. Gonzalez-Marquez was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on more than $3 million bail, according to jail records. He was held on two counts of attempted murder, attempted first-degree assault, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. Tuesday's shooting is the fourth reported in west Medford in just over a month, though it is the first that has resulted in injuries. A drive-by shooting was reported in the 500 block of Edwards Street Sept. 9 when gunshots punched holes in a fence and home where at least two people live. No suspect information is available in that case. On Sept. 16, police say 17-year-old Tyler Sandoval fired three shots at an apartment complex stairwell in the 1000 block of Narregan Street. Sandoval remains at large; suspected cohort Santiago Flores-Loveland, 18, was arrested Oct. 9 in Bellflower, Calif. Three additional men who allegedly were present during the shooting have been arrested. The third shooting was reported Sept. 20 near the intersection of Iowa and Narregan streets when a man fired twice at an area resident who had spotted their vehicle driving slowly around the neighborhood and eventually parking. The shooter and two others in the car wore dark hooded sweatshirts, though no additional description was available. Budreau said police are cognizant of the rise in reported shooting incidents over the past month in west Medford but aren't sure what's causing it. "We really haven't been getting a lot of intelligence on anything that precipitated this," Budreau said. "There's definitely a rise in activity that we're seeing. Not sure what's causing that. We're not receiving any good information that would make sense to us." Three other men who were allegedly present during the shooting, Alonzo Lee McBrown, 31, Latraveon Deshawn “Trey” Wesley, 18, and China Amir Acuna, 17, turned themselves in to police.
