Mail Tribune 100, July 22, 1922 continued By Alissa Corman Jul 23, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago July 22, 1922 continued LOCAL BRIEFS It is reported that work will start within a few days on the new armory at Medford, for which Medford and Jackson County recently appropriated $40,000. — Oregon Journal. ----- Fourteen people, foresters of the New England states, traveling under the auspices of the American Express company, left by stage for Crater Lake and Klamath Falls Friday morning. This company has been traveling since the beginning of June making a tour of the National parks. ----- The fire alarm early this afternoon was the result of a small grass fire on West Eleventh street. The small chemical truck went out and the fire was soon extinguished. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The following letter was received this morning from the local office of the Crater Lake National Park company: “Dear Sirs: Wish to announce to the people of Medford and the valley that the Rim Drive will be open on Saturday afternoon, July 22, 1922. This is ten days earlier than any previous year. Yours truly, Crater Lake National Park Co.” This announcement will be welcomed by many local motorists who wish to make the trip to Crater Lake and take in Diamond Lake on the way back. NoW that the snow is cleared from the rim road no difficulty should be encountered in reaching Diamond Lake. ----- Mann’s store, in featuring Humming Bird silk hosiery, have a window display in which a 120 pound block of Ashland granite is suspended by one hose. This display is a novel one AND was arranged by John Moffatt. ----- Fishing in the Rogue river is improving and reports state that the steelhead are being caught readily on the fly. Wallace Williams caught a twelve-pound steelhead on the fly at Three Pines near the mouth of Little Butte creek last evening. ----- Court Hall returned last night to McCloud after having spent yesterday in the city having his hand attended to. It is reported by Court’s friends that he injured the hand when casting a spoon in the river near McCloud where he and the Frank Isaacs and Buchter families are enjoying an outing and fishing party. However the report is doubted by some of Court’s staunch supporters who state that he never fishes with anything but a fly. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
