The Pirates improved to 5-2 overall, 3-0 in league, while the Mustangs dropped to 0-3 in the Skyline. Ross, a senior, struck out seven and walked one. "Ross continues to throw the ball really well and really hard," said second-year Pirates coach Bill Shearin. Offensively, Phoenix collected 10 hits. Catcher Shannon Reed went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Ross was 2-for-3 with one RBI and senior Kelsey Russell also recorded two hits. "We are working really hard and focusing on our hitting throughout the entire lineup," Shearin said. "And at this point, it is working really well for us." ILLINOIS VALLEY 4, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Merlin, Illinois Valley junior pitcher Kim Hamilton tossed a three-hit shutout and helped her cause with two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Hamilton struck out 10 and didn’t issue a walk while registering her fifth victory without a loss. Illinois Valley (5-1, 3-0 Skyline) picked up a pair of runs with two outs in the first inning when Erica Riley walked, Hamilton crushed an RBI double and a throwing error plated Hamilton. For North Valley (3-5, 0-3 Skyline), pitcher Kelleye DePorte only gave up two hits and one earned run. DePorte struck out six but walked eight. MARY’S 5-7 — At Jacksonville, sophomore pitcher Rusti Mosser registered victories in both ends of the doubleheader, combining for 19 strikeouts, and led Cascade Christian at the plate with a 5-for-7, six-RBI performance. Anelise Montan ended Mosser’s no-hit bid in the opener with a fifth-inning RBI single. The Challengers (3-3, 2-0 District 6) were led by Danae McGraff’s 3-for-5, four-run effort in Game 2. Heather Bellamy, Robin Ballard and Mosser added two hits each. For St. Mary’s (0-6, 0-4 District 6), Alex Tomlinson and Brittany Farrer each contributed a pair of hits.
