Phoenix girls continue to struggle PHOENIX -- This is turning into the season that wasn't for the Phoenix Pirates girls basketball squad. The Pirates (5-8, 0-4 Skyline) appeared on their way to their first Skyline Conference victory Saturday, but a fourth-quarter collapse found Phoenix absorbing a 52-42 loss to visiting Mazama. Phoenix held a 19-18 halftime lead and stretched the margin to three entering the final period. "We just didn't take care of the ball at crunch time," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "We had a lot of mistakes and missed a lot of free throws in the fourth quarter." The Pirates committed 32 turnovers in the game and missed seven free throws in the final period. Dena Young and Robin Teeples did most of the damage for Mazama. The Vikings' guard tandem combined for 42 points. "They lit it up," said Walker. "We didn't do a very good job with our perimeter defense." Phoenix got an outstanding performance from junior wing Jennifer Bones, who scored 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had five blocks. "She played big for us," said Walker. "It was probably one of her better games of the year." MAZAMA (52) -- D. Young 22, Teeples 20, Bishop 8, Burk 1, L. Young 1, Hunk 0, Hunt 0, Castor 0.
