Mustangs win 14th in a row MEDFORD - Home sweet home. The Medford Mustangs returned home Monday after playing 16 straight road games, and they didn't forget their bats, trouncing the Central Point Comets 10-0 and 15-0 in a pair of five-inning games at Miles Field. Medford (27-13) has won 14 straight. I n Game 1 , Matt Skundrick blasted a grand slam and Travis Dunlap hit an RBI double in the third inning to help put nine runs up on the board and chase Comet starter David Sills. Skundrick finished the game with four RBIs. Mustangs leadoff hitter Phil Ouellette reached base four times without swinging the bat. He was hit be a pitch each time and scored three of the four times he reached. Chris Empio and Evan McArthur combined on a one-hitter in the opener. In Game 2 , the Mustangs collected 16 hits. Ouellette led the offensive assault with four hits, four RBIs, and four runs. He had a homer, triple and two doubles. Medford's Brent Kircher went the distance and didn't allow more than one runner in any inning. He retired the last six batters, striking out three. SOUTH MEDFORD COLTS 8-5, KLAMATH FALLS 2-4 - Ryan Norris went 3-for-3 and picked up his first pitching win, helping the Colts to a doubleheader sweep in American Legion action at South Medford High School Monday. In Game 2 , Norris pitched all seven innings for the Colts in his first start of the season. In Game 1 , Jeremy Frantz hit a two-run double in a six-run first inning for the Colts. The Colts, 8-12, travel to Klamath Falls for a doubleheader Wednesday. NATIONALS 11, GOLD VALLEY 1 - The Medford Nationals Little League won in four innings in the District 8 tournament at Central Point Field on Monday. Trevor Davenport pitched all four innings for Medford, allowing only one run on two hits, while fanning six. Matt Durant had a solo home run and two RBIs in the win. Josh Surgeon chipped in with a double and two RBIs. Medford plays Roseburg today at Central Point Field. SOUTHERN OREGON 3, BEND 1 - Casey Campbell allowed only one run on five hits to lead Southern Oregon in the Sunday game at Miles Field. Campbell forced Bend into eight ground-ball outs, including a game-ending double play. Evan Wiesner hit a go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the second inning for Southern Oregon. Bend left nine runners on base, including six in scoring position. The RiverDogs, 11-11, take on Weed and Sons in a nine-inning contest at Miles Field on Wednesday. The RiverDogs are 2-0 against Weed and Sons, having defeated them 9-4 and 5-4 earlier this summer. L - Sammis. 2B - B: Quick; SO: Wiesner. Softball The South Medford Blue Aces 16-and-under girls fastpitch softball team finished third at the state tournament at McMinnville Sunday. The Blue Aces, made up of girls from the South Medford program, started off the tournament Friday with a 1-0 win against the Dalles Blaze. On Saturday, they beat the Forest Grove Sun Devils 4-1 and the Rogue Valley Rebels 3-0. The Blue Aces began play Sunday with their only loss, a 2-1 defeat to the Klamath Falls Gems. But the Blue Aces bounced back with three consecutive victories: 4-3 over the Ashland Bandits, 3-2 over the Rogue Valley Rebels and 2-0 over the North Clackamas Ice. The Blue Aces have been invited to the Northwest Regionals Tournament and donations are needed. For information, call Doc Chaplin at 734-5421.
