Noris Lee Hilde, 52, was killed in Thursday night’s attack and his wife, Sherl Ann Hilde, 45, remained in critical condition on Saturday. According to police dispatch logs, Noris Hilde used a cell phone to report that his wife had been shot. Soon, he started screaming. His wife managed to get on the phone. She said her husband had also been shot and was unconscious. She said she couldn’t move her legs. Sherl Hilde said she was in her trailer and that she and her husband were the only people in the camp. The Roseburg-area couple were parked in a meadow at an old mill site off the North Umpqua Highway. The location is an unimproved camping area not far from Lemolo Lake. Advertisement The Douglas County emergency communications log says Sherl Hilde told emergency medical technicians that "they wanted the truck." Hilde is now in critical but stable condition at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend after being shot in the chest at least one time, relatives said. Hospital staff at St. Charles Medical Center would not acknowledge that Sherl Hilde was in their care Saturday, but her father, Arthur Ennis of Roseburg, said doctors have told the family that his daughter has a bullet in her body which may be lodged near her spine. The Hildes’ son, Noris Hilde Jr., 25, is a firefighter now returning from a wildfire in Colorado, relatives said. Their younger daughter, Chenoa Hilde, 12, was brought home from summer church camp by a pastor after learning of the shooting. Sheriff’s Lt. Curt Strickland said investigators have contacted hundreds of people as they search for leads. The people who live near here were stunned by the shooting. "Everybody is freaked out because that kind of thing just doesn’t happen around here," said Debbie Baker, a Diamond Lake resident. "Nobody knows anything. The cops are saying nothing so nobody knows anything," she said. "To my knowledge there has never been anything like this, except for a few hunting accidents. I’ve lived here for 20 years and this is just too close to home." Lorene Roosevelt, a family friend, said Noris and Sherl were looking forward to a camping trip and a little bow hunting. Noris formerly served in the U.S. Marine Corps and Army National Guard, she said. "He survived Vietnam and is killed like this," she said. "This just really bothers me. We still can’t believe Noris is dead."
