Phoenix’s Palomino earns Skyline MVP honor By Kris Henry Updated: Nov 16, 2022 09:08 PM A A Without question, Phoenix boys soccer coach Chris Gallegos viewed senior Daniel Palomino as the backbone to his team’s success on the pitch this fall. His coaching peers in the Skyline Conference saw it the same way. After scoring 16 goals and contributing 10 assists — to go with considerable help on defense and ball-control for possessions — Palomino was named Skyline Conference boys soccer player of the year in a vote by the conference’s coaches. Palomino was one of two Pirates to secure first-team recognition, with junior Dominic Crenshaw also landing on the top list. Crenshaw anchored a defense that allowed 21 goals in 18 games for state runner-up Phoenix while also posting three assists from his center back position. Henley’s Lupe Gonzales was named Skyline boys soccer coach of the year. In Skyline girls soccer voting, Phoenix senior Sofi Rodriguez and sophomore Carsyn Gallegos were named to the first team. Gallegos was one of the leading scorers in the conference, netting eight of her 10 goals in conference play to go with two assists on the season. Rodriguez chipped in with two goals and three assists for the Pirates. Gabrielle Heverly, a senior for Hidden Valley, was named the Skyline girls soccer player of the year and the Mustangs’ Dennis Hart was named Skyline girls soccer coach of the year.
