BASEBALL: Mustangs roll to win in Roseburg By Mail Tribune staff Jun 09, 2022 09:53 PM A A ROSEBURG — After Wednesday night’s season-opening win, Medford Mustangs coach Nate Mayben knew the trip to Roseburg the very next day would be a good gauge to see where his team is at. Consider this test passed with flying colors. Starting fast and breaking things open with a six-run sixth inning, the Mustangs rolled to their second blowout win in as many days to begin the 2022 summer season, beating the Roseburg Dr. Stewart’s 16-6 at Legion Field Thursday night. Mustangs leadoff man Cody Borraggine finished 3-for-7 with a double, five RBIs and two runs scored, leading a Medford offense that finished with 20 hits. The next two batters behind Borraggine in the Mustangs’ order, Cameron Sewell and Tanner Douglas, also had big games at the plate. Sewell went 3-for-6 with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs, while Douglas finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Borraggine led off the game with a double, then scored on Sewell’s RBI triple to right. Douglas followed it up with an RBI single before Aiden Horsley made it 3-0 with a hard-hit run-scoring single. Roseburg got a run back in the bottom of the first, but Medford (2-0) stretched its lead to 4-1 on Borraggine’s bunt single. With the score 6-2 in the top of the sixth, the top of the Mustangs’ order led the charge again as they broke things open. Douglas hit an RBI single, Owen Thompson hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Frankie Rutigliano added an RBI single of his own to make it 9-2. Borraggine capped the rally with a three-run single to put Medford up 12-2. Horsley and Jeremiah Robbins each had two hits apiece, while Rutigliano finished 2-for-4 with a double, a pair of RBIs and three runs. Much like he did in Wednesday’s win, Mayben distributed the innings evenly between the four pitchers he used. Julius Bolstad got the start, throwing the first two innings before Douglas and Sewell each threw a pair of innings in relief. Rutigliano closed things out, throwing the final three innings. The Mustangs pitching staff finished with seven strikeouts, four of which coming via Rutigliano. Medford returns to the field Saturday when it faces the Fairfield Expos at 6 p.m. in California. MEDFORD ROGUES 7, SACRAMENTO SAINTS 3: Grant Henry and Emiliano Alarcon accounted for six of the Medford Rogues’ nine hits and combined to drive in five runs in their team’s win over the Sacramento Saints at Harry & David Field. Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Rogues (2-3) rallied for three runs to tie the game. Barron Zamora cut the deficit to 3-2 with a two-run single before Alarcon tied the game with an RBI double. An inning later, Medford took the lead against Sacramento, a team made up of incoming college freshman will see virtually every player attend Sacramento State next year. After Trey Nelson walked, Henry blased a two-run home run to left to put the Rogues ahead 5-3. Three batters later, Alacron singled in Reece MacRae, who walked the at-bat following Henry’s homer. Alarcon finished 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Henry was 2-for-4 with a home run — his first of the summer — and three RBIs.
