St. Mary's girls in second at state golf REDMOND -- St. Mary's, one of the strongest small-school girls golf programs in the state in recent years, is again in the hunt for a state championship. The Crusaders, led by an 84 by Katie Johnson, are in second place among 16 teams following first-day action at the Class 3A-2A-1A state tournament Monday at Eagle Crest Golf Resort. They trail leader Marist by 19 strokes. This despite subpar performances by three of their five players. "It's the golf gods," said St. Mary's coach Bert Putney after his team came in with a 372 total on the 5,395-yard, par-72 layout. "There's no reason, it just happens. Sometimes you've got it, sometimes you don't." St. Mary's finished eighth at last year's tournament and third the year before. Johnson had a solid round and is five shots behind leader Omaki Hanamoto of Waldport, who shot 79. Katie Mania, who won the District 6 crown a week earlier, shot 89 for the Crusaders. After that, teammates Jodi Luce (98), Heidi Durden (101) and Cherrywin Kongma (115) were off their games. Luce and Durden each averaged 91 through the season and Kongma averaged 101. Still, Putney isn't ruling out a charge in today's second and final round. "If they fall off a little," he said of Marist's players, "and we gain a little, we have a shot at it." District 6 runner-up Henley is in third place at 383. TEAM SCORES (Top 5) -- 1, Marist, 353; 2, St. Mary's, 372; 3, Henley, 383; 4, Riverside, 384; 5, Burns, 387. Boys Golf CLASS 4A STATE TOURNAMENT -- At Aurora, rain held over from Sunday night left the fairways wet and the scores high for early risers Monday at the par-71 Langdon Farms Golf Course. Individual players Steve Hilgendorf of South Medford and Per Englund of Ashland each had early first-round tee times and each paid the price. Englund posted a 78, Hilgendorf an 82. Mid-morning sunshine helped dry out the course and lower scores for those with later tee times, with Grant's Raun Atkinson taking the early lead at 3-under-par 68. Westview managed the first-round team lead at 296, with Roseburg nearby in fourth place at 308 and Grants Pass in 10th at 314. South Medford coach Bill Singler said Hilgendorf was a little stunned with his first-round total. "He played well (Sunday) in his practice round," said Singler. "Today he just didn't putt as well or get on the greens as well, and that cost him a few strokes." Singler said Hilgendorf and Englund should be able to turn things around in today's final round of play because they will "have a round under their belt and can relax a little bit."
