After allowing only 12 goals in 17 games, the Phoenix goalkeeper was a unanimous pick for District 6 player of the year. "I don’t think there is a 3A keeper in the state that can contend with her," said Pirate coach John Doty. "She has the ability to handle a live ball from a teammate, has soft hands and excellent reflexes with great range." Hidden Valley’s Gary Elledge earned coach of the year honors for the second straight year. Unruh set a school record this season with nine shutouts and added two more in postseason play. Unruh also led the league in goals-against with an average of 0.64. Phoenix, which advanced to the second round of the Class 3A/2A/1A playoffs, had another league leader in 2004 in forward Marci Klimek, who scored 13 goals to lead all players. Advertisement "Marci created an incredible amount of headache for other teams," Doty said. "She’s a persistent finisher and very opportunistic." The Pirates also landed sophomore defender Tamara Heryford on the first team. Cascade Christian’s Sarah Brown scored 15 goals this season, but because of two forfeit losses, four goals were wiped off the board. Brown still made the District 6 second team, one of six honorees for the Challengers. Junior defender Jessica Urton was a first-team pick after anchoring the Cascade defense. "Jessica kept us in a lot of games this season," Challenger coach Craig Warren said. "We didn’t score a lot and she kept us close defensively. She probably brought us to three overtime games." Rival St. Mary’s landed two on the first team in midfielder Renee Huizinga and defender Liz Tribelhorn, both seniors. "The last four seasons, Liz has been our most solid player on the field," Crusader coach Lia Kirkpatrick said. "She has single-handedly run our defense and was a great leader." Huizinga, a transfer from South Medford, scored five goals this season for St. Mary’s. League champion North Valley had nine players receive all-star status, led by forward Shea Miller and midfielders Kayla Wilhelm and Cybill Torres.
