Phoenix opens Skyline season on triumphant note PHOENIX - Despite a 2-6 record in non-conference action, Kyle Walker and the young Phoenix girls basketball team weren't terribly distraught heading into Skyline Conference play. "When we started the season, we said Jan. 4 is the target date," said Walker, the Pirates' 13th-year head coach. "We haven't worried too much about 2-6. We're just trying to improve every game." Boosted by 21 points and nine rebounds from junior post Tiffany Ross, Phoenix (3-6 overall, 1-0 Skyline) was on-target Friday night, downing Illinois Valley, 62-32, to get off on the right foot in the Skyline race. The Pirates stormed to a 17-8 lead through one quarter, held a 32-18 edge at halftime and put it away by outscoring the Cougars 17-3 in the third to go up 49-21. Wing Jamie Cavener, Phoenix's lone senior, tallied nine points to back up Ross. Pleased with his team's progress, Walker believes the Pirates can compete in the Skyline.
