The Southern Oregon Historical Society will house administrative offices at its Jacksonville museums, the next step in paring expenses from a decreasing budget. The society’s board of trustees unanimously approved the move Wednesday from the downtown Medford History Center. The board’s decision is ultimately a cost-saving measure, said SOHS director John Enders. The Historical Society’s budget will be reduced by 21 percent in the next fiscal year, Enders said, which begins July 1. SOHS temporarily shuttered several of its programs last year after Jackson County cut about 20 percent of the organization’s funding. The coming move will allow administrators to work more closely with the Historical Society’s two Jacksonville museums and programs at nearby Hanley Farm, Enders said. SOHS is preparing to launch in January the exhibit "Peter Britt: The Man Beyond the Camera" at its main Jacksonville museum. The organization’s offices should be relocated by January or February, Enders said. SOHS leases its two Jacksonville museums from the county for a dollar a year. The Historical Society’s main headquarters moved to Medford from Jacksonville in 1989. Advertisement "This is not an effort to abandon Medford by any means," Enders said. SOHS will not put up any new exhibits at the Medford History Center. "Celebrating Flight: A History of Aviation in Southern Oregon" and "Lasting Impressions: the Life and Art of Dorland Robinson" are scheduled to come down at the end of the year, Enders said. However, the Historical Society’s research library will remain open to the public at its present History Center location. SOHS still wants to occupy the abandoned Carnegie Library building adjacent to Alba Park but is waiting for discussion with Medford city officials to resume following the November election, Enders said. Remodeling the 92-year-old Carnegie Library likely would cost between $500,000 and $700,000, according to an engineering study commissioned by the city. The city’s parks department, which also has made a bid to occupy the space, could contribute about $450,000 to the effort, said Jef Faw, deputy city manager. Enders said he hopes the city will pay for the retrofit, but SOHS could contribute some money from the History Center’s sale. The History Center, at 106 N. Central Ave., has been on the market since January for a listed price of $2.1 million. SOHS now hopes to lease 15,000 to 20,000 square feet in the History Center until a buyer is found, Enders said.
