The victory over the Salem school squared the Crusaders’ overall record at 2-2. St. Mary’s didn’t have a 100-yard rusher but still rumbled for 331 yards. Keith Butts scored touchdowns on runs of 14 and 7 yards and on a 22-yard pass from quarterback Mike Rust. Butts ran for 63 yards on eight carries. He also caught Rust’s only two completed passes in six attempts, good for 30 yards. Brian Kirkpatrick ran for 75 yards on nine carries and Willie Terrall added 73 on 15 carries to buoy the Crusaders. Joe Fetty chipped in 57 yards on 11 carries. "Our offensive line blocked really well in the first half," said St. Mary’s coach Pete Zappas. "It was nice for the offensive line to pick up their defense. They were sending eight or nine guys sometimes, so we did a pretty good job of picking up blitzers and stuff. "I think we got a little tired in the second half, and when that happens, things tend to slow down. But we got a lot of younger guys in in the fourth quarter, so it was a good day for us." Much of the ground yardage came behind John Wing, the Crusaders’ 315-pound junior tackle, and Eric Burg, a 210-pound senior guard who flanks him. On defense, Butts led the way with nine tackles from his linebacker spot and helped plug the middle with tackles Wing and sophomore Colin Jensen. Fetty, a sophomore defensive end, had his best game with eight tackles and kept Blanchet from getting outside on his side. St. Mary’s recorded its first two interceptions, by freshman cornerback Ryan Greene and Terrall, a senior who was shifted from end to strong safety this past week.
