Signal won't be replaced Why did they take the traffic signal out at 12th Street and Central Avenue in Medford? -- Jerold D., Medford Bet this isn't the "they" you thought it was, Jerold -- the light was taken out by a tractor-trailer driver in an accident on March 25. After the mishap, the city considered replacing the light, an expense that can run more than $100,000, said Ralph Browning of the Medford traffic engineering division. But last week engineers decided the signal (which had been in place since 1955) really wasn't warranted. They looked at factors including traffic and pedestrian counts as well as accident history. They even consulted a government volume called -- no, we're not making this up -- the Manual of Traffic Control Devices. Browning said the signal controller box will be taken out soon, and the signal poles and overhead wiring will go as time permits later this year.
