Corvallis stuns South Medford Prep boys soccer CORVALLIS -- After playing defending Class 4A boys soccer state champion South Eugene to a 1-1 tie on Friday, South Medford had a letdown against Corvallis one day later. The Panthers could never get untracked in a penalty-laden game and the Spartans walked off with a 4-1 win. It just wasn't South's day. The Panthers missed a penalty kick early in the game and a direct kick bounced off a post in the second half. "When we made a mistake they took advantage," South Medford coach Dave Potter said. "It was a very frustrating day." John Semademi gave Corvallis the lead with a goal in the seventh minute. Damian Rasmussen made amends for missing the penalty kick two minutes earlier by tying the game with a goal in the 12th minute. "Kevin Miller made a solid defensive play to win the ball," explained Potter of the goal-scoring play, "and he slipped a pass to Damian, who got it past a charging goal-keeper." Corvallis took a 2-1 halftime lead on a direct kick just outside the penalty box in the final minute by Eric Cronkite. Cronkite and David Smith added second-half goals for the Spartans. Corvallis ended with a 12-7 margin in shots on goal and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. "Corvallis was just playing at a faster speed than we were today," said Potter. SOUTH EUGENE 5, NORTH MEDFORD 1 --Micah Newman had two goals and two assists and Nate Jaqua added one goal and two assists to pace South Eugene over North Medford in non-league play. Johnny Whitaker gave the Black Tornado a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the game off an assist from Babak Asgharian, and Whitaker just missed drilling home another goal five minutes later from 10 yards out. But from that point on, the defending state champion Axemen had their way. The loss dropped North Medford to 0-2-1. ROSEBURG 5, SPRINGFIELD 0 -- At Roseburg, Roseburg (4-0) received goals from five different players in the non-conference win. Ryan Holt, Brad Coen and Joe Collier scored in the first half to give the Indians a 3-0 lead. Vince Garcia and Joe Kaser completed the scoring. Roseburg had a 15-2 advantage in shots. PHOENIX 4, COTTAGE GROVE 2 -- At Talent, Jesse Shorland had two goals and one assist as Phoenix improved to 2-1 on the season with the non-conference victory. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead at halftime on Jaime Bugarin's goal from 8 yards out off an assist from freshman Chris Swann at the 31st minute. Shorland scored his first of two second-half goals on a header at 48 minutes. Masaya Yano added the other Pirates' goal four minutes later. Phoenix outshot Cottage Grove 19-6. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 2, ROGUE RIVER 0 -- At Rogue River, Ryan Plummer's first-half goal was all Cascade Christian needed in the non-league game. Peter Lopez scored an insurance goal for the Challengers (2-1-0) in the final two minutes of the contest. Rogue River (1-3-0) was forced to play with a man down most of the second half when a player was red carded. The Chiefs also lost starter Zack Wilken to a shin injury in the second half. EAGLE POINT 1, BONANZA 1 -- At Eagle Point, Danny Harless knocked in the tying goal in the 11th minute of the second half for Bonanza in a non-conference matchup. Eagle Point (1-1-1) broke through with the first score in the 15th minute on a Brad Crawford breakaway goal. Goalie Mason Scudder assisted on the play. The Eagles outshot Bonanza 14-12.
