Crater claims championship at Amador tournament PLEASANTON, Calif. - Crater's girls came up with a strong finishing kick for the finishing touch on its championship in the Amador Basketball Classic. The Comets, battling foul trouble throughout, got a big first half from tournament most valuable player Amy Denson and dispatched host Amador Valley High, 67-56, Saturday. Oregon's second-ranked Class 4A team ran its record to 4-0 with its third straight win over a California school. It was the first time in seven years Amador Valley didn't win the tourney title, and the victory avenged Crater's only loss last year before it was defeated in the state title game. Amador Valley, ranked seventh in Northern California, has averaged 30 wins the past three seasons and is the three-time defending champion of the North Coast Section. Crater built a 20-point lead in the second half, but Amador Valley rallied to within eight points with just over a minute to play. A Sarah Yager 3-pointer put an end to the Dons' hopes. "This is probably the most hostile environment we'll play in all year," said Crater coach David Heard. "It was a big crowd that was so loud you couldn't communicate. It was nuts." Denson, who scored 16 of her 21 points in the first half - the same total Amador Valley had as a team when it trailed 32-16 - played only about five minutes of the second half. Sarah Pool and Addie Wiersma, who joined Denson on the all-tournament team, were similarly strapped. "All the kids who came in off the bench just did an awesome job," said Heard. "Everyone chipped in when they had to." Denson also had 13 rebounds and four blocked shots, and Pool contributed six assists.
