Officers discovered Wendy Maldonado, 35, and the couple’s 16-year-old son, standing outside the house. Wendy Maldonado said her 36-year-old husband had been yelling but was asleep now and everything was quiet, according to the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety. The lights were off in the home, and neighbors said calm was restored. So four officers left the area, Grants Pass police Sgt. Rob Gunderson said. Three hours later, Wendy Maldonado called police back to her home, Gunderson said. But this time, she said to bring aid to her husband who lay bludgeoned in the couple’s bedroom, Gunderson said. Wendy Maldonado allegedly used a hammer to hit her husband "probably several times" in the head while in the couple’s bedroom before summoning police, Gunderson said. Advertisement Aaron Maldonado later was pronounced dead at Three Rivers Community Hospital, and his wife was later arrested on a murder charge. Wendy Maldonado was arraigned Monday in Josephine County Circuit Court on a charge of murder constituting domestic violence. She remained in the Josephine County Jail without bail Tuesday. Gunderson said Aaron Maldonado likely was attacked a short time before his wife’s 5:39 a.m. call to police, when she said her husband had been assaulted and needed assistance. Gunderson declined to discuss any possible motive for the slaying, or whether Wendy Maldonado had any visible wounds when police arrived. He also declined to say whether investigators believe the victim was awake when he was attacked. Wendy Maldonado was detained at the scene and taken to Three Rivers Community Hospital for blood and urine samples, Gunderson said. She then was taken to the Grants Pass police station and interviewed, Gunderson said. Wendy Maldonado was arrested following that interview, Gunderson said. The case remained under investigation, Gunderson said. Grants Pass police previously had not been called to the couple’s home, which is in a short street recently annexed into Grants Pass city limits, Gunderson said.
