Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 20, 2005 Two men jailed after teen beaten, robbed GRANTS PASS — A Josephine County teen was beaten with a hammer and burned in the eye Tuesday by two men who assaulted him over a small debt, police said. At around 7:30 p.m. the 17-year-old victim was lured to a small storage shed at the 300 block of Southeast Riverside Avenue. When he entered the building, he was captured by Matthew Adam Jefferson, 22, and Eric Adam Kelly, 18, both of Grants Pass, police said in a news release. The two young men then threatened and assaulted the victim. They burned one of his eyes and beat his hand with a hammer in an attempt to collect money, said Detective Dave Daniel with the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety. "Basically what it boils down to is an unfortunate set of events," Daniel said. He added that the assault was spurred by "not a great amount of cash." After he was injured, the teen was robbed of personal property and let go, Daniel said. "He was allowed to leave with a cigarette," Daniel said. Advertisement He was treated for his injuries and released from Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass. Daniel said the teen’s hand was not broken by the hammer blows and that he would not lose his eye. The teen waited until Wednesday to report the incident, saying that he feared retaliation. Jefferson and Kelly were lodged in the Josephine County Jail on charges of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, coercion and menacing. They were each held in lieu of $50,000 bail. Grants Pass police are asking anyone with further information on this case to call Daniel at 541-474-6370.
