"All's I know is that when we left the trailer that night, he was still standin' and alive. I didn't even know how the guy had died until my attorney told me," Duane Eugene Bond Jr., 31, said Tuesday from behind glass and iron mesh in one of the attorney-client interview rooms at the Josephine County Jail. Bond said the victim in the March 11 stabbing, 78-year-old Jerald Wesley Eigenbrod, was involved with Lisa Smith, the mother of Bond's girlfriend Kayla Stauffacher. Stauffacher's 3-year-old daughter occasionally visited her grandmother at Eigenbrod's trailer on South Side Road in Murphy. Bond said that hours before Eigenbrod's death, he and Stauffacher recorded the toddler talking about interactions between her and Eigenbrod that caused the couple to worry that Eigenbrod had been molesting the child. "At the time, I was in the living room, and heard the conversation between (mother and daughter) and I was like, 'What is this kid talking about right now?' So I went and got the iPad from my backpack and started videotaping it." Bond stated that the little girl described "some crazy stuff" that consisted of various acts of molestation committed on her person, as well as sexual acts she witnessed between "Jerry" and her grandmother. Stauffacher and Bond went to Eigenbrod's residence to question him about the child's statements. "That's the whole reason we went out there that night," Bond said. "We went out there to ask them, you know, 'What the hell is going on?'" Bond claimed that after Stauffacher confronted her mother, an altercation ensued between the two, and that another man living at the South Side Road property in a separate building tackled Stauffacher to the ground and then pressed a gun to her head. "They took photos of it when we got arrested," Bond said. "She had three perfect circle imprints on the temple of her head. And bruises. And the only thing I can think of is barrel imprints, you know what I mean?" In an email, Josephine County District Attorney Ryan Mulkins said state bar-press guidelines limit his ability to comment on the case, and particularly the evidence. However, he added, "An investigation into 'allegations' of sexual abuse by the victim Mr. Eigenbrod is not possible due to Mr. Eigenbrod being the victim of a homicide." Oregon State Police Sgt. Deanna Harris, meanwhile, confirmed that Bond has told authorities he and Stauffacher were on the property to confront Eigenbrod about possible child molestation. Previously authorities have not described a motive for the slaying or released any details about how Eigenbrod died, other than to say he was stabbed and they believe Bond did it. Smith, Stauffacher's mother, last week told the Daily Courier she was advised by authorities to keep quiet about what happened the night her elderly neighbor was attacked. However, she did confirm that her daughter is or was Bond's girlfriend, but said that Bond and Eigenbrod hadn't met before. Bond, who has a lengthy criminal record, is alleged to be the last person to see Eigenbrod alive. A probable cause affidavit filed by OSP Detective Bryan Scott states Bond was "seen leaving the victim's residence several minutes (after Stauffacher's altercation with Smith) with a bloody knife in his hand." Bond said that is inaccurate. "We had already gone out the door and that was when my girlfriend's mom and (the other man) had the gun and stuff. I didn't have a knife. I had the iPad in my hand. And I grabbed Kayla and spun her around so that I was between the gun and her and … that was it. We left." Bond also said there were at least three buildings on the South Side Road property in which several men and their families lived. Bond contacted the Daily Courier on Monday because someone told him he was being depicted as a white supremacist who likes swastikas. "(The media and police) use all this stuff against me from my past. And then using my tattoos and stuff — 'Oh, he's a Neo Nazi!' and everything. That's bull----." Bond said after he went to prison, he became a practitioner of Asatru ("belief in the gods") and believes in poly-theistic Odinism. The swastika, he said, "it's, uh, like 'bring about good.' It's 'good people.' You know? It's not a bad thing at all." Bond's estranged wife, Christine Bond, told the Daily Courier that she has a letter from Bond that dates back to 2014 in which he told her the swastika originated as a positive symbol "that was usurped by Hitler and turned into a terror symbol." "It goes back to what his religion is, it goes back way before Hitler stole the logo," Christine Bond said. "To the Norse gods. Duane is not the monster that he is being made out to be." During the interview on Tuesday, Bond seemed most concerned with the welfare of Stauffacher's child. "(The police) ended up confiscating the iPad and since they have it, they better have looked at the … videos, you know what I mean? To what was said, what's wrong with the little girl. They didn't even go out there and talk to her, or anything." Bond remains lodged in the Josephine County Jail without bail pending trial.
