He didn’t have to look very far Thursday. The 6-foot-2 senior scored a career-high 23 points — eclipsing his previous best of 14 — in a 75-52 rout of Weed in the Yreka Invitational. The tournament features eight teams and continues through Saturday. Phoenix meets the Del Norte-Etna winner at 7 tonight. The Pirates (5-0), playing without post player Ben Decuir, who is ill, and guard Nathan Bursk, who is out until next week with a leg injury, nevertheless raced to an 8-0 lead and weren’t threatened the rest of the way. Advertisement Oxford was at the heart of the surge. "He did a real nice job tonight," said Phoenix coach Kevin Dixon. "On the inside, they didn’t have that much, and we went to him quite a bit. He did a nice job of finishing and ran the floor real well and got some easy baskets." Brett Ellis added 12 points and eight assists, Jason Lockett had 10 points and Michael Smith had nine points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. The Pirates forced 25 turnovers and scored 30 points off them. Another highlight was 20 assists, giving the team 38 in its past two contests. "The guys are really making some nice passes and have been really unselfish," said Dixon. ROGUE RIVER 82, DUNSMUIR 44 — At Yreka, Calif., Rogue River used a suffocating press and energetic transition game to blitz Dunsmuir in the first round of the Yreka Tournament. Rogue River shut out Dunsmuir, 24-0, in the first quarter, then substituted liberally the rest of the way. Four Chieftains scored in double figures, led by Gary Richardson’s 13 points. Joey Parrillo scored 12 points and Spencer Frantz and J.T. Vaughn 10 each. Vaughn added seven rebounds and Frantz five assists as Rogue River improved to 3-2. The Chieftains meet the Yreka-Shasta winner at 8:30 tonight in the eight-team tournament. The finals of the eight-team tournament are Saturday. The Mustangs chipped away at the lead behind a game-high 15 points from Jordan Hayter. Brother Nick Hayter added 13, while Skyler Ogden chipped in 10 points. Artoff made 6 of 10 shots and both her free throws en route to 17 points. She also amassed eight assists for the Chieftains (1-3). For St. Mary’s (0-4), Britta Beckstead scored 13 points and did an admirable job filling in at point guard when regular Kelly Walden pulled a muscle and sat out much of the second half.
