OF NOTE: Sutherland, whose former roommate, Sara Tucholsky, made news when she was carried around the bases recently on a home run, was in the limelight herself for her play. Sutherland led the Wolves with a .381 batting average and, in the postseason, hit .625, going 10-for-16 at regionals. » Social News The Western Oregon softball team began this past season with high expectations and ended it with national exposure. And nobody was more surprised than shortstop Tyler Sutherland. "It was a great story and I'm glad people were able to hear it," says Sutherland, a former Crater High School softball star. "But it was such a weird situation." On April 26, Western Oregon faced Central Washington University in a conference doubleheader. Senior Sara Tucholsky hit her first-ever home run, but as she rounded first base, she missed the bag. In her attempt to go back and touch it, she twisted her right knee, tearing the anterior cruciate ligament. By rule, her teammates couldn't help her complete the home run, so, in a touching display of sportsmanship, two opposing players lifted Tucholsky and carried her around the bases, allowing her to touch each base with the foot of her non-injured leg until she scored. With their help, she completed a three-run home run in a 4-2 win that helped send the Wolves to the NCAA Division II tournament. "The team was more concerned for her as a person," Sutherland says. "We weren't even thinking about winning the game." "It really put everything into perspective," she says about the incident. "That could have happened to anyone, and just like that your softball career could be over." Western finished second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and advanced to the West Regional as Tucholsky watched from the bench. The Wolves won four straight games before losing twice to Humboldt State and being eliminated. They wound up with a school-record 33 wins against 18 losses. Sutherland and Tucholsky are roommates, making it even harder on Sutherland to see her friend sidelined by injury. "I understood that she wanted to be on the field, but obviously she couldn't," Sutherland says. "But she was always there to cheer us on. It was nice having her there." Just as it was nice for the Wolves to have Sutherland, a 20-year-old sophomore, in the lineup. The former Comet had an exceptional season, but she saved her best for regionals. At only 5-foot-4, Sutherland swings a violent stick and she brought that with her to the tournament. She finished the regular season as the Wolves' leading hitter for the second consecutive year with a .381 average. She had 67 hits on the season and missed breaking her own single-season school record by just two hits. "Everything she has achieved is through hard work," Western coach Pam Knox says. "She just keeps getting better because she works very hard." Sutherland was the team's rookie of the year last year and was a first-team all-conference selection. She repeated the latter this past spring and was chosen for the second team by the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association (NFCA). During Western's six regional games, Sutherland batted .625, going 10-for-16, making the all-tournament team. Those who saw the Gold Hill native in action in high school might not have been surprised. The 2005 graduate twice made the all-conference first team and maintained a 3.5 grade-point average. Scott Sutherland, Tyler's dad, says that in high school his daughter went largely unnoticed. "Ty has always flown under the radar, and she was very happy about that," he says. "Too much attention can be a bad thing, so she was fine with being overlooked." Although Sutherland had other opportunities, she settled on Western and is happy with her decision. "I chose Western because of the academics first and foremost," Sutherland says. "It is close to home but far enough away for me to feel independent. I really love it here." Sutherland redshirted her first year and has two seasons of eligibility remaining. She plans to graduate next year and use her fifth year to work on her master's degree in health education. "She is a homebody," Scott Sutherland says. "She just loves coming home. But more than anything, she is at Western because it is what she wants and she is so happy with what she is doing." Knox is just as excited to have Sutherland at Western. "Tyler brings heart to our team," Knox says. "We haven't had a true shortstop at Western for a while, and she is definitely it. In my opinion, she is by far the best shortstop in the region. "I've been able to watch her grow up these past three years, and she just loves to play, you can see it.
