You�ve got to work for can cash I know a lot of folks are frustrated with the process of recycling aluminum cans at your local store � standing in line, machines that don�t work, yellow-jackets in the summer, etc. I was wondering what the difference is between the 5-cent refund per can versus the bulk rate of crushed aluminum cans at a recycling center. � Glenn G., Medford You can dodge the hassle of taking your cans to the store, but it�s going to cost you. Both Rogue Disposal & Recycling and Ashland Sanitary and Recycling will accept crushed aluminum cans free of charge at their transfer stations. But they aren�t going to pay you for them, so you basically forfeit your nickel a can for the convenience. Schnitzel Steel in White City does take aluminum, but don�t expect to make much there either. The company pays 4 cents a pound for aluminum beverage cans. Other states, such as California, pay more per pound because they are subsidized by the state, Schnitzel officials say. But in Oregon, if you want your nickel, you�re just going to have to deal with taking your cans to the stores.
