RAIDER ROUNDUP: SOU banks a point vs. Yotes By SOU Sports Information Oct 15, 2022 09:44 PM A A ASHLAND — Southern Oregon lost a late lead but secured the draw and a four-point weekend against two nationally-ranked teams by tying No. 22 College of Idaho 1-1 on Saturday afternoon at Raider Stadium. In a scoreless game with 25 minutes left to play, SOU defender Sophia Connell served up an improbable assist to Mia Santander while being pressured at midfield — lofting the ball over the defense and allowing Santander to retrieve it in the box and line in the first goal. The Yotes evened the score in the 76th minute when Gianna Yslava took a pass from Lily Schlake and struck the crossbar from 15 yards out, watching the ball bounce down and just over the line. The Raiders, coming off Friday’s 4-0 upset of No. 25 Eastern Oregon, brought their record to 6-4-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the Cascade Conference. They matched a program record by extending their unbeaten streak to seven games and are third in the CCC standings by win percentage with four regular-season contests left to play. The Yotes (11-1-2, 7-0-2) — who have outscored opponents 28-2 during an active nine-game unbeaten streak — fell two points behind first-place Northwest (Wash.). Raider keeper Jessie Selby preserved the point by making seven saves, including a few of the spectacular variety. SOU’s back line of Connell, Jordan Bell, Madison Childers and Olivia Euverman came through to allow the Yotes to put only eight of their 22 shots on goal. Santander’s goal was her second of the season. Yslava’s was her sixth and stopped SOU’s shutout streak at five matches. Men’s Soccer COLLEGE OF IDAHO 3, SOU 1: At Ashland, College of Idaho capitalized on some second-half mistakes and ended Southern Oregon’s winning streak at six games. C of I’s Eric Hornung scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season, the first to break a scoreless tie in the 57th minute when he stepped in front of an errant pass on SOU’s back line and converted a one-on-one chance against Raider keeper Casey Ruvolo. Sam Walker equalized for the Raiders seven minutes later. He was set up by Noah Addie’s cross that found Alan Gaytan for a sliding, left-footed pass in the box. But in the 73rd, Emil Powles took advantage of SOU’s hand-ball in the box by knocking in a penalty kick for the game-winning score. Before Hornung’s initial score, the Raiders (9-5 overall, 6-3 CCC) hadn’t given up a goal in 586 minutes over a stretch of seven games. They and the Yotes (8-4-1, 6-3) are now tied for fourth place on the CCC table, though the win gave C of I the potential tiebreaker. Volleyball SOU 3, EVERGREEN (WASH.) 1: At Ashland, Southern Oregon volleyball team moved back into third place in the Cascade Conference with another quality win, 25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 25-18 at Lithia Motors Pavilion. Hannah Randall established a new career-high for the second night in a row with 50 assists, adding eight digs and four kills while directing the attack. Sadie Byrd converted 12 kills on 21 swings while Carol Melo had nine on 17, and the middles were both in on team-highs of five blocks. The Raiders moved to a season-best 10 wins over .500 at 16-6 overall. They improved to 10-5 in the CCC. SOU hit .201, shrugging off Evergreen’s 14 blocks, and only had two reception errors — 13 fewer than in Friday’s five-set win against Northwest. Hailey Van Well supplied a team-high 16 kills on 49 attempts, reaching double figures for the 11th time in 12 matches. She came through in the critical third set that featured 17 ties, dragging the Raiders out of a 24-23 hole with three consecutive kills to steal it. Vroman also had two late kills to even the score.
