The host Challengers marched to a 25-13, 24-26, 25-15, 25-22 victory in the first match then closed out the doubleheader with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-15 triumph to complete the Southern Cascade League sweep. Cascade Christian (16-2, 8-0 SCL) picked up 31 kills over both matches from Natalie Dicus and combined for an impressive 112 digs. "The scores don’t indicate how tough the match was," said Challenger coach Susan Gmur on the defeat of the second-ranked Honkers. "Lakeview is a good all-around team. "We were consistently putting the ball away at the net." Advertisement The Challengers’ only struggle came in Game 2 of the first match. Three service errors helped Lakeview slip by with its only win. "I never felt like it would get away from us," Gmur said of the second-game defeat. "We still had momentum and were still playing well." Audrey Holmes played a key role in the first match with 14 digs, while Dicus added 12 digs, Melissa Gmur contributed 24 assists and Emily Overstreet slammed home nine kills. In the final match, Dicus had 14 digs, Holmes had 12 and Kyleen Johnson set the offensive tone with 18 assists. Cascade Christian plays three of its final six matches on the road. CLEARWATER CLASSIC — At Bend, Ashland won the silver division crown and Roseburg advanced to the gold bracket title match at the Clearwater Classic. The 23-team tournament boasted all Class 4A top-10 ranked teams. The Grizzlies defeated North Medford in the silver bracket semifinals, 25-18, 25-20, then ousted Mountain View in the championship, 25-21, 27-26. SOC-leading Roseburg advanced to the championship match of the gold bracket, which featured the top eight qualifying squads from pool play. But the Indians couldn’t get past top-ranked West Linn, dropping a 25-8, 25-10 decision. South Medford also fared well, advancing to the silver bracket semis before losing to Mountain View, 27-26, 26-24. Crater advanced to the bronze bracket semifinal match, but lost to eventual champion South Eugene, 25-21, 25-20. Grants Pass, which also competed in the bronze division, dropped its first-round match to Summit. EMERALD VALLEY TOURNAMENT — At Eugene, Phoenix won the consolation title of the Emerald Valley Tournament by beating Stayton, 25-19, 25- 21, and Pleasant Hill, 25-16, 25-21. The Pirates dropped both of their pool play matches in three sets to host No. 3-ranked Marist and No. 6-ranked Valley Catholic. ST. MARY’S SWEEPS CHILOQUIN — St. Mary’s got the job done when it counted most — in the fifth game of both matches of a doubleheader with Chiloquin. The Crusaders (6-7, 3-5 SCL) defeated Chiloquin in the opener 23-25, 25-23, 25-9, 18-25 15-8, then rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the second match, 25-21, 21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-8. Kelsey Reedy sparked St. Mary’s in the twin bill with 36 kills and 59 digs. Reedy’s 24 kills in the opener and 34 digs in the nightcap are both individual career and team season-highs. St. Mary’s received big defensive efforts from Alissa Stevens (42 digs) and Alexa Burwell (36 digs). Claire Crawley paced St. Mary’s serving, going 35 of 36 from the line with eight aces. Sara Godshall provided a team-high four blocks. Cross Country STOUTENBURGH WINS JIM DANNER INVITE — At Portland, junior Isaac Stoutenburgh’s winning time of 15:13 at Blue Lake Park was one of the state’s fastest in the 5,000-meters this season. The Crater boys placed fifth out of 70 teams and finished third among teams from Oregon. Jake Keyser (15:46) and Geoff Donaldson (15:55) also broke the 16-minute barrier for the Comets. Kendel Nelson ran well for the Crater girls, placing ninth in the Division I race in 18:30 to help the Comets finish 11th as a team.
