Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Tornado fends off South rally North capitalizes on Panther foul woes to notch eighth straight victory By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune Brittany Farrer was the headache that eighth-ranked North Medford had no relief from Tuesday night. Yet, after pouring in a career-high 31 points, the whistle ultimately did in the 6-foot-2 senior post and, in the process, her South Medford teammates. The Black Tornado (17-2 overall) girls basketball team drilled 12 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter and went on a 9-3 scoring burst after Farrer fouled out with two minutes to play to seal a 62-56 triumph over rival South Medford at the Panthers’ gym. The win was North’s eighth consecutive in the Southern Oregon Conference and kept the Tornado even with Ashland atop the league standings at 8-1. South Medford (11-8, 5-4 SOC) has dropped two straight and remains in third place in the SOC. Advertisement "South did exactly what I thought they would do," said North coach Tim Karrick, whose team beat the Panthers 67-56 earlier this season. "We couldn’t stop Brittany. You’ve got to give her and South credit. "Obviously this gives us something to work on." Farrer entered the game averaging 18.3 points per contest, with a previous high of 23. She scored all 14 of her team’s points in the third quarter Tuesday and finished with 20 in the second half. "Fortunately, I had the open looks and my teammates found me," said Farrer, who also snared 10 rebounds and blocked four shots. "The main thing is we played team ball. (North) is so fast, on the inside and on the outside. We were able to slow it down a little and make them play at our pace." North senior post Mellisa Eastwold had a career night of her own, matching a season-high in points with 25 to go with eight offensive rebounds. "(Tonight) was a little hard because we were coming off that big win," said Eastwold of her team’s 52-33 victory over Ashland last Friday. "A lot of our shots weren’t falling. "It was a tough game. We were just able to pick it up in the second half." Eastwold’s defense also played a big part in the North win. Using her long arms and every inch of her 6-foot frame, the senior post hounded point guard Katie Singler for much of the contest. "Mellisa just doesn’t quit," said Karrick. "She was really giving Katie fits out there." Neither side led by more than seven points, and there were seven ties and four lead changes. Foul trouble, however, mounted for the Panthers in the final quarter. South whittled down a 44-37 deficit to 47-45 early in the fourth after a pair of Farrer free throws. Less than a minute later, junior forward Marissa Towry, who played most of the second half with four fouls, knotted the game at 47-all on a three-point play possibility. But her free throw caromed off to leave the game deadlocked. Two Towry free throws tied the game for the last time at 53 apiece at the two-minute mark. Farrer, however, fouled out on North’s next possession, which Eastwold turned into two made free throws, and Towry exited one minute later with her fifth foul. "We were neck and neck with them, then the fouls came," said Panther coach Andrea Jaime. "We were a little thin at post (after the foul outs) and just didn’t have enough left." Singler drained a 3-pointer to trim the Tornado advantage to 60-56 with under 20 seconds to play. But North point guard Kailey Bostwick managed to dribble 12 seconds off the clock, then cashed in on a pair of foul shots for the final margin. "I was very pleased with how we played," said Jaime. "We were able to dictate the tempo and we handled their pressure. I’m very proud of the girls." Bostwick added 18 points and seven assists to the North Medford attack, while sophomore Megan Ross hauled in six rebounds. Singler dished out seven assists for the Panthers.
