Two people were apprehended Sunday night after leading police on a high-speed chase during which they swerved at oncoming vehicles, threw a bicycle in the roadway and rammed a patrol car. Driver Christopher Michael Rock allegedly drove a white Dodge Caravan at high speeds during the 19-mile, 24-minute chase that started in a church parking lot and ended with a foot chase after Rock got the van stuck on railroad tracks off Gold Ray Road outside of Central Point, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. “Their speed was over 70 mph at one point on Hanley Road,” sheriff’s Sgt. Julie Denney said. “At one point, the vehicle stopped and backed up trying to hit the deputy, but the deputy was able to get out of the way.” Rock was arrested after the sheriff’s K9 Titan found him hiding in bushes near the tracks around 9 p.m. Sunday, deputies said. His alleged bike-tossing passenger, identified as 49-year-old Susan Anne Medcalf, was taken into custody a short distance from the disabled van, deputies said. No one was injured in the ordeal and one sheriff’s car was lightly damaged, deputies said. Rock and Medcalf, who are local transients with long criminal histories here but not together, were lodged Sunday in the Jackson County Jail without bail for violating the conditions of their paroles on previous convictions, Denney said. The ordeal began at 8:27 p.m. when a sheriff’s patrol deputy attempted to stop the van parked at a church off Bellinger Lane near Minear Road, deputies said. The van immediately sped away and swerved at times into oncoming traffic that included other law-enforcement vehicles descending upon the area, deputies said. Deputies lost sight of the van in a nearby neighborhood but discovered it again on Arnold Lane and regained pursuit. The van eventually struck a sheriff’s patrol car at the intersection of Hanley Road and Rossanley Drive, deputies said. The van continued on Old Stage Road and then to Scenic Road, where Medcalf allegedly threw a bicycle into the roadway from the moving van, but deputies were able to avoid the hazard, police said. Eventually the van bolted down Gold Ray Road and attempted to jump the adjacent railroad tracks but became disabled, causing minor damage to the tracks, police said. From there, Rock and Medcalf fled on foot before their eventual captures, deputies said. Officers from the Oregon State Police as well as the cities of Medford, Phoenix, Jacksonville and Central Point took part in the pursuit, deputies said. Rock was taken into custody on charges of attempting to elude police in a vehicle and on foot, reckless driving, reckless endangering of another person, hit-and-run driving, first-degree criminal trespass and two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, records show. Rock, who has numerous drug, assault and driving-related convictions in Jackson County, was convicted of fleeing Medford police twice in 2013. He also is awaiting trial on February 2017 charges of drug manufacture, possession and delivery charges after he was found driving a vehicle in Central Point that contained his mother as a passenger and what police called more methamphetamine than for personal use, according to a police affidavit in the case. Medcalf was jailed on a charge of first-degree criminal trespass and five counts of recklessly endangering another person.
