What happened in the case of Grants Pass teacher Van Len Granger, who was accused of sexually abusing a boy he was mentoring? — A concerned grandmother Granger, 49, was originally accused of committing second-degree sodomy and first-degree sexual abuse of a child under 14 years old in 2015. Those charges were dropped and Granger instead pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of attempted second-degree sodomy with a child under age 14, according to Jackson County Circuit Court records. He was sentenced to five years of probation, must register as a sex offender, must surrender his teaching license and is not allowed to work directly or indirectly with minors, according to court records. Granger was a fifth-grade teacher at Manzanita Elementary School in Merlin, located north of Grants Pass. The drawn-out case included multiple motions by Granger’s paid defense attorneys to suppress evidence found during searches of his home and computer. In a motion to the court asking to introduce evidence of Granger’s sexual interest in children, Jackson County Senior Deputy District Attorney Terry Smith-Norton described the allegations against Granger. The motion said the victim lived in foster care and was a student in Granger’s class in Merlin for two months. Later the boy was moved to a placement in Medford. Granger allegedly contacted the boy’s caseworker and asked to take part in a mentoring program with the boy. His request was granted, the motion said. A Medford elementary school teacher suspected something inappropriate was going on, triggering an investigation, the motion said. The boy alleged Granger anally sodomized him multiple times, including at a movie theater in Jackson County and in Granger’s car behind a Josephine County shopping center, the motion said. The victim also alleged he was sexually abused at a youth camp, the motion said. During the investigation, detectives searched Granger’s computer and found multiple Internet searches for pornography involving young boys using search terms that included “boys,” “torture” and “bondage,” the motion alleged.
